Mi16 And Gti 6 Gearbox?

Recommended Posts

jonathan205

Hey everyone, ive just bought an mi16 engined 205, which currently has a 1.6 gearbox in it. This is great for backroads but i have to do a fair few miles in it too and at motorway speeds its far too revvy! I was thinking about a gti 6 gearbox..would it fit? if so how much do they go for normally??

Cheers,

Jonathan

Yes it will fit but your turning circle will be crap.

You would be better fitting an Mi16 or a Xsara VTS box.

i have a gti6 box on my mi16 and it will fit no drama but you will need to change the clutch arm to be1 or b3 as the gti6 box is a pull type clutch plate and the mi16 has a push type so you will need the thrust bearing aswell but this all fits straight in no problems other than that if you fit an early gti6 box the N/S drive shaft does not mate up unless u get a gti6 input shaft orn swap the diff over from your 1600 box. this should swap straight over tho if you decide to go down that route or just buy a gti6 N/S shaft and swap the ends over.

you will need to swap the speedo drive over aswell as a gti6 one is digi and a 205gti is not but this is another simple thing ifyou need any more advice feel free to PM me bud

Turning circle is only affected in one direction, so just park on the left instead - problem solved!

GTi6 box means swapping the gear selectors over and also swapping the clutch arm as mentioned above. Everything is dead easy to swap over from your current 'box.

Mi16 box is what you really need, GTI-6 box you'll be changing gear all the time, not to mention turning circle.

It is the best compromise if of lower short ratios with good cruising ratios. At 80mph mine is just a touch over 4000rpm.

Other routes you could try are having a diesel 5th gear installed into your current box or change the CWP.

What are you talking about? Pick a cruising speed, stick to it, no need to change gear constantly. Isn't that how driving works?

The gear ratios are brilliant, and top gear is slightly longer than any of the 5 speeds! I don't know why anyone would want to ruin a perfectly good set of ratios by sticking a long 4th and 5th in, what an anticlimax that must be when you get into top gear!

Easy now, I was just offering another option, brought on by the fact that the OP has already a 1.6 box.

I'm currently driving a car that has a rack fitted with limited lock for a GTi6 box.

It's crap, awful, a real ball-ache trying to manoevre (sp) anywhere, parallel parking is just stupid, and i can't even reverse up my drive perpendicular to the road withoput taking 2 chunks at it, even the mini roundabout down the road you have to be careful and set yourself up to go round it, taking a wide arc to then turn earlier. Ridiculous.

I'm not sure if this one is even more so limited than usual, but i really hate it, it's pathetic.

Sounds like it.. maybe mine was easy because of the 309 wishbones and narrow 185 tyres.. Will see how I get on with my 7" wheels when it's up and running.

This is running standard 1.9 rims with 195's, and i can't see the 309 'bones adding much tbh!
