I Sound So Dumb!

Recommended Posts

Guest itshowiplay

Ok so my little 1.6 is about to have the motor pulled out for a full body respray.

My general plans are to keep it as a road car but also play on the hill climb over here.

As the respray is taking up most of the current budget (along with the roll cage and fuel cell) I am left with about £500 to spend, I like it as a 1600 so dont want to engine swap etc but would love to squeze more horsies out of her.

Now as this is my first Pug I thought I would throw it out to you experts to see what you would suggest to give me some more ooommmppphhh !!

As a side note, my standard 1988 engine is really sound already - so where do I begin?

Many thanks in advance.

P.S. the £500 is just for starters, it will be an ongoing stage by stage project!

i would start with the suspension tbh, work on the 205`s strong points handling. Do a search and see what other people are doing or have done things like polybushes,309 wishbones, adjustible top mounts.

But if you are going down the chasing power route ,Start with a camshaft maybe or a set of twin 40s ,maybe a free`er flowing exhaust system.I would recomend injector cleaning that has seen good results and theres a member on here that does them look in the group buy section

One of the first things I would do is probably is fit a shorter ratio final drive to the gearbox and maybe a LSD.The shorter final drive really does make a big difference - alot quicker acceleration and the LSD would help out of the tight corners, especially in the wet.

Don't the regulations for hill climb specify only slight mods allowed otherwise you fall into the modified catagory?... If you do anything other than an air filter to the engine it's modded.

If that was the case getting an Mi16 fitted (even though you're not keen on engine swap) would be the best bang for buck....

Its all about the handling in my eyes!!

I am beating a £40k worth of Race Spec BMW M3 EVO with a 1.9 on Webbers and a Catcam, all down to the fact that the 205 is so light and small to start with. If you keep standard suspension its just going to bury itself into the corners and you could have all the power in the world but if you cant apply it then whats the point!!

A good set of suspension and get the car as low as possible to lower the centre of gravity!!

Then if you can stretch a little more on the budget then an LSD to pull you round those bends!!

fitting a decent set up as per Wardy's suggestion (and many others when you search through posts etc) the difference is like night and day, the change is amazing, so thats where my cash would go especially as you say the engine is a strong lump.

An Mi16 would put him into Mod Prod. In my opinion it should be in Libre , but hey ho.

Adjustable top mounts are not allowed in roadgoing either.

You can do a fair bit to the car but my advice is to read through the relevant pages of the 'Blue Book'
