Engine Missing

Hey iv got a 205 xs that is missing pretty badly. As background you should probably know that its is burning oil and puffing out alot of blue smoke. The missing seems to be mainly when in a particularly high gear for the speed your going (eg. 5th at 50mph) and when accelerating very gently. I dont know if the problem is to do with the engine burning oil, or if it is more likely to be with the electrics. The car seems to be fine if you accelerate hard and in a lowish gear. Oh yeh and by the way the carb has been very recently cleaned out. Thanks

Hi mate , where's your engine gone !? Lol!

No I think the oil could be your problem, you have described it quite well. At around 50 in 5th on very light throttle produces a small amount of vacumm in the inlet manifold therfore drawing in oil from worn valve stem oil seals. Get the plugs out and check iff they are heavily covered in oil, also check your ht leads dizzy and rotor arm and all the rest of it to be sure.

One thing I recomend you trying is finding a steep hill travelling down it in as low gear as possible while completly off throttle and the engine brake for you. As you hit the bottom of the hill step on the throttle and look in your rear veiw mirror, if you have a large amount of blue smoke behind you youe valve stem oil seals or guides are worn. Check the plugs first and see how much oil is on them if they are covered black and wet this is more than likly your misfire problem.

Ben

Thanks, will do that once i get my rearview mirror glued back on haha. I am quite tempted to take the head off and send it away to get rebuilt (any ideas how much a top end rebuild would be?) I have been told that it may be the piston rings too, which i am worried bout as i doubt i would rebuild the engine if it wasnt just the head. If it was the piston rings i would probs get a 106 tu put in. Thanks

It would probaly cost 200 quid mate then additional for refitting bits like timing kit and stuff. Check the stems firstly mate do what I said with a hill create the vacumm and put your foot down checkl for a blue cloud. Eleiminate orfind out if it is the stems. After you know if your stems are worn or not doesn't matter get a compression and clyinder leakage test done across all cylinders won't cost you much at a local garage. Then give us a shout when you have some results mate. Well give you some suggestions towards your decission on what to do.

Get your spark plugs out firstly. Plugs can tell you a lot about your engine.

Hey thanks for that really help, i did the hill test and not really much smoke to be seen behind. The dizzy n rotor arm are screwed tho, so im in the process of changing those, although got sent the wrong parts so might take a while. Does the fact there was no smoke after doing the thing from down the hill mean that the valve stems probably are ok, and does it mean there is another probleme with the engine (eg. piston rings :s)
