i have read about the red top engines and with the right mods bodies etc they can go 150 but i know a we bit about the red tops and he states it has has pistons cams etc but doesnt mention what kind or how agressive they are he doesnt realy mention much about the engine at all but i think with just cams he would struggle to get 148 and thats not to say the speedo is very accurite either but 130 sounds about right

My BMW 330ci will do 160mph (never tested it!) but have been about 135mph for a very short while and felt fast enough.....148 in a Nova would just be so dangerous and unstable....

 

not that these kids think if that of couse, I think we are all indestructable when we are in our teens! LOL

Engine is sitting somewhat twisted aswell which is odd never seen one that far around

I can't remember the last time I saw a Nova that wasn't resprayed in a horrible colour! Ruins it imo

urrrrrmmmmm engine is sat a funny angle i had one a few years ago and never looked like that lol

 

also 148mph hes pulling his plonker ent he!! mine was remapped and had rally cams( tick over sounded like a chopper lol) and gas flowed head with a lightend and balanced bottom end and pushed 138-140 with no wind against me.

 

might offer him a bag of my salted nuts and a half eaten sandwich lol

Some of those engines are very strong, the offical Astra GTE 16v top speed was 137mph or so I think. I know weight is less of an issue at speed but I think it'd do 140 or so easily. I know my 205 hits the limiter in 5th quite easily with the 1.6 geabox(135 or thereabouts) and with the original 1.9 gearbox it would steadily pull towards and over 7000rpm (145iish)

 

Althought this is a Vauxhall speedo we're talking about!

So the engine has a misfire so who knows whats up with it, could be simple or major, he spelt some as sum and the most important issue here is, why were you searching for Novas on ebay anyway

Why is the speed so hard to believe though, not to blow my own trumpet or anything but it's hardly that far-fetched, my poxy little 1.6 does 130 fairly easily, and the theoretical top speed of a 1.9 'box given enough power and revs is something like 163mph.

I've done 140+ in a 205 S16, went of the dials but my sat nav indicated 142 top speed

That's the only Nova I've ever really liked! Beige saloon but with a Calibra turbo engine in it. Neatest install I've ever seen as well!
