205 Gti In Autocar

Recommended Posts

KRISKARRERA

Some of you might like to know that the current issue of AUTOCAR magazine features the 205 GTI in part of their hot hatch article. There's other cars such as the mark 2 Golf GTi 16v and Clio Williams and even the 205 XS gets a little mention.

The mag articles are getting a bit repetitive aren't they? Is the result any different than the previous ones?

Yes, there's nothing new there really...

No conclusion as such but Autocar readers voted:

1. Delta Integrale.

2. 205 GTi 1.6.

3. Focus RS (mk 1)

4. Golf GTI (mk 1)

5. Escort Cossie

6. Civic Type R

7. Seat Leon Cupra R

8. 306 GTI6

9. Golf GTi 16v (mk 2)

10. Clio Williams

Also at the back there's a "mini" review of the 1.9 205 and they describe it as having an "additional 25bhp of power" over the 1.6 which of course is incorrect as by then the 1.6 was 115bhp.

Im not sure about that but iv had an XS, it was the car that got me into the 205's and my current 86 GT handles better in the corners. Both had around the same mileage and my GT is 2 years older. I tested the height of the GT and it is the same height as my 1.9 gti. I didn't test the height of the XS though. The XS was faster though.

early 1.6 had 105bhp did they not? They then got the same head as the 1.9 for more power.

Didnt the XS come as a 3 door too?

Basically the same car underpinnings but the XS got the more powerful and lighter weight engine.

The GT is the 5dr version of the XS there pretty much identical other than the door count, I can't see how there would be much difference between either tbh except that the 5dr car would be heavier, the later TU engined ones are the better versions of them though

but the gt had an iron block, just like the rallye and a lethargic 75bhp...

the xs is alloy block is it not and 86bhp? (figures plucked from my head so no doubt inaccurate...)

Arguably the TU engined 205's were better handling than the gti's IMO, probably due to the better weight distribution front to rear. Gti's had more grip though as standard.

Pretty certain a GT's just a 5dr XS as Lan said.

And although correct that the 1.9's had 25bhp more than the first 1.6's, it's pretty pointless to say, and unfair, considering how many 105bhp 1.6's you see and can buy/drive these days. The majority by far were the 115bhp models, so only fair to use that yardstick IMO.

Surprised the Clio was so far up the list tbh.

I wonder how many people voting have actually driven multiples of the top ten to give a decent fair vote though...

I'd never put a Lancia Integrale or the cosworth in the same category as the 205 and clio though. They were never hot hatches in the original sense. Homologation specials deserve their own class.

Read my signature, they may have invented the hot hatch but the Golf started the craze due to reliability .

Vauxhall nor Talbot are British cars are they, just the engines were, weren't they ? (or am i missing something ??

well the Talbot is semi-British really as its origins are Anglo-French more French really, but the Lotus Talbot sunbeam I'd say is definitely more British than French

I'm not surpriseed the 205 XS got a mention, Chris Harris (one of their writers) owns one & thinks its great.

As above, afaik the GT is just a five door XS, same engine (both 1293 & 1360) etc.

Graham.

Yep the gt is just a 5 door xs, same engine. Surgie, given that yours is an 86 i guess it has the xy8 engine in it? I've had xs's with both the xy8 and the tu3s and i'm sure the xy8 cars handled a bit better, unless it was my imagination!
