205 Gti 1.9 High Revs Problem

Recommended Posts

Goran

Hi

The problem is this: The car goes absolutly lovley from 1500-3500 rpm, and from there on it seems to lose power. It's not like it's misfiring or things like that, from 3500rpm on it just feels like it's got like 85 HP.

The engine itself is in great condition ( compresion is good, no big oil consumption or things like that)

I checked the vacum hoses they seem to be in good condition, and the car is working nice on idle.

i have changed the intake manifold and nothing changed, changed the "air flow" thing (i don't know what it's called in english) nothing changed also, changed the ECU and still nothing.

Injectors were checked and cleaned ( they are from 1.9 model yellow)

New spark plugs

i don't know what to try to change anymore...

i was thinking of changing the fuel pump ( but the slow acceleration on high revs is very linear with no cuting-off, so i doubt the pump is the problem)

i would like to hear your ideas cause i'm runnig out of mine ;)

Could it be spark scatter? How is the distributor cap, rotor and plug leads? Maybe your catalytic converter is breaking down inside and causing an obstruction?

You're right, engine timing is controlled by the ECU in these later cars ;)

Catalytic converter was removed a year ago... it's a track day car so no need for it :)

Well, if the 1.9 130hp is not a rev happy engine, the 105hp (your version), is even worse. Maybe is not a problem, is the just the way that engine works...

Yea sounds like the 105hp version. Otherwise it may be that your fuel pressure is too high? Is the throttle response very fast between those stated rev ranges?

actually it's the 120hp version (xu9jaz)...

But the main problem is that i can't get my hands on a full stock gti over here to see how it goes through the revs...

What do you think... should i change the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump?

Bumping this topic...

I've changed the intake manifold (later i heard that the 1.6 and 1.9 are the same) the AFM

tomorow fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator are on the menu :)

should i try to change the complete dizzy with cap and everything else on it

i was thinking of puting a mi16 final drive but i got a feeling it would just scream in high revs and it wouldn't go anywhere...

all in all i'm getting kind a lost here

was the AFM the correct one?

before changing any parts you should really check and test them unless you are rich

If it's a genuine Motronic DKZ, the AFM is only interchangeable with a 405, either Mi16 or 8V Motronic. Obviously you'll need to swap the air filter body parts.

Check fuel supply by disconnecting the return line off the fuel rail. You should get 500mL in 15 secs. into a bucket. ie 2L/minute.

Verify the cranking pressures and post them here.

gauge in spark plug hole - eg 190psi cold

I have the same engine, there isnt a great mount of top end, the cam is differnet to a 130 version, so are not as rev happy by nature, but more low end torque. Did you get it on a rolling road? 90@ the wheels should be for a good engine

It could be the Catalytic converter, mine was like your's, same engine and all standard. Turned out that my cat was totally mashed and was causing back pressure.
