Rough Running After Engine Clean

Recommended Posts

mick3pugs

Hi Folks,

I have a 1.9 GTi auto bhp, low comp engine (think it's motronic).

Recently I cleaned the engine bay during the hot weather....took the battery off, covered wiring etc. with clingfilm, kept moisture to a minimum...distributor cap covered, no open hoses.

I used a 2l garden spray to clean specific areas.....

Car stood for 2 weeks while away....started ok but tickover dropped to 500rpm and stalled. Started up again and revved till engine warm but engine hunting and lumpy, kept car ticking over for 50 mins (can't drive as no tax or mot).

Befgore the engine clean the tickover was smooth at 750rpm......

Could this be down to water problems?? Any ideas please???

Cheers

Mick

Try cleaning spark plugs. Ive had this problem after cleaning my engine and water got into the spark plugs and when I had a burst water hose. Don't think 205's like getting engine area wet. You might need to replace some of the spark plugs (or all 4). When I replaced mine engine started ticking over perfectly. Worth a try. Let me know how you get on.

Also worth trying a set of plug leads if you have some, had this problem myself many years ago (last time i was daft enough to try cleaning under the bonnet!!!!!) if it was wet in the plug recess the water can work its way into the leads and cause rough running once the engine is warm.

Did you put a plastic bag over the dizzy cap. A while ago when i did my engine i forgot to do that and got water in there, might be worth taking it off and having a look.

Cheers Ashley...

Hi Gixxerash,

I've got one of those OEM dizzy cap covers on it.
