Missing At High Revs

Recommended Posts

joe_g40

hi, i am nearly finished on my track 1.9 gti but took her out for spin yesterday and it seemed fine until high revs. The car pulled very strongly until 4k rpm then it sounded like a rally car on the start line. Struggled to get past 4k with v loud backfiring and popping. As i said it drove very well and smoothly until then. Any ideas would be good. Thanks joe

Im going to say what i always do....I had this exact problem because of an ignition amp fault; just couldnt get past 4000rpm. Although thats not to say its the only possible cause. If you can find a known working one to swap to then do it just to rule it out.

Yup, ignition amp would be the first thing I'd try as a 4000rpm rev-limiter like misfire is a common failure from them.

also check in between distributor and cam shaft for oil ingress into or onto the distributor.

Ive had the exact same sproblem when I did some dodgy wiring with resistors to get the tacho working on my 2.0 turbo.

It sounds ignition amp related - also worth checking incase you touched any wiring to the coil?

hi, thanks for replys. I have fixed problem now. Seemed to be the ignition module. The plate it was mounted on obviously wasnt making a good enough connection so i scuffed up both surfaces and now it revs freely. Thanks guys.
