Cutting Holes In A Blank Tb Baseplate

Recommended Posts

wildejon

I'm wanting to buy a new baseplate for my TB's and have the holes moved up a bit, because currently my bonnet sits on the filter and is never quite even when down. In my quest for a tidy car, this is on the list to do.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what company supply these pre-cut (I'm hoping they would be able to tweak the positions for a one-off) or has the ability/tools to cut these for me?!

It is a Pipercross 600 filter but they dont have Pug fitment sizing on their site, or anywhere else I've looked.

Hi

You dont really need a engineering company to create the holes.

If you know a enthuisiastic diy'er they will most likely own a set of hole saws. If not get up screwfix and buy a cobalt hole saw and arbour and pilot drill bit and drill your own. Only issue is you'll most likely only be able to get a 44mm hole saw so you'll need to remove a little material from the backplate with a file to blend them into the trumpets and bodies.

It shouldnt take a hour to get it all drilled spot on.

:)

if you do not fancy buying the hole saw, simply a jig saw and a round file will do the job nicely but take you a lot of time.

(I did mind with the jig saw and files, took me an ages to finish :) )

If you pm me the dimentions of the base plate i'll cut it for you on a cnc plasma cutter, it's not laser quality but certainly good enough for a filter base. Then just sort me out with postage costs and it'll arrive on your door step within a few days :)

Sounds like that might be a plan, thanks!

I could draw it up for you if it helps import into the CNC machine? :)

Thanks for the advice guys, never seen those hole cutters before, actually just what I need for a different project, awesome!

Awesome, thanks.

That 4mm dimm is odd, if the hole were in line with the mid-line and not offset by 4mm I'd not have the issue I do.

I wonder if there is a reason for it?

may be to give room for the trumpets' lips i guess :)

by the way, it probably not from jenvey but from itg

I guess I'm about to find out... ;)

Seems like there is quite a bit of room in there though, should be ok.

Lol. I'll let you know how I get on, not 100% my model was truly accurate but if it is you are more than welcome to it if it's useful!

Really hope it all works ok, it's been bugging me for years

Hi Mark, got the plate in the post today. Thanks for doing it and so fast too!

Lined it up with the old one and it looks spot on, holes are about 3-4mm higher which should be enough.

Let you know once it is fitted but it should make a difference, hope Ive moved it enough.

Good to hear :P

I would have got back to you sooner but my internet hasn't been working for a couple of days.

If it turns out not to be bang on let me know and we'll make a mk2.

I popped over to the car today and had a look. I hadn't realised how poorly the original fitted to the airflow holes, the holes in the plate are way larger than they need to be.

Doesn't matter though, the new plate you sent me will work great and definitely enable me to move the air filter down a few mm which was the goal.

I'm happy to draw up a more accurate one if you would like it or if it helps out others. We could make a Mk2 that fits exactly... I'll keep a record of the mods I make to it, I think I'll have to slot a couple of the mounting holes but its an easy job.

Keep you posted once I get it re-assembled (injectors getting cleaned first I hope).

Thanks again!
