Rev Counter With Gti6 Conversion

Recommended Posts

fliprio

I have a Gti-6 conversion and my rev counter doesn’t work, however reading through a few topics from doing a search seems to show that the problem is due to the gti-6 engine running 4 coil packs instead of the original single coil.

My car is running on carbs with a single coil mounted on the passenger side suspension turret, so should the rev counter work without a problem? or did the original rev counter wiring go via the ECU (which I assume I no longer have because it’s on carbs)

Cheers

Dan

should work fine as the setup you have sounds identical to the original one, the coil supplied the trigger for the rev counter, wire 112, shielded light green wire.

sounds like I need to trace some wiring through.

So the shielded light green wire comes from the coil, does it join straight to the rev counter, or is there a differnt coloured wire that it joins to?

I have a feeling the preveous owner had an external rev counter, so may have disconected it.

Sorry to butt in but can the rev counter be connected to one of the coil packs instead of the ecu? :)

I believe its waisted spark so would give a false reading

not wasted spark on a gti6, but 4 directly driven coilpacks in sequential ignition, you'd need to make up a pickup/converter with about a quid's worth of resistors and diodes from maplin or the likes and connect them to the 4 trigger wires, one to earth, and the last to the rev counter signal wire, wire 112.

to the O.P, wire 112 as far as I know goes all the way to the rear of the instrument cluster, and from memory the 12v feed to the rev counter can cause it to stop working if fuse 1 blows, plenty of info in the haynes manual on the wiring though.

I was told to try that method by Rowley Engineering in Devon and i didn't think it sounded right.
