Clutch Problem

Recommended Posts

tidypug

Hi all, I have fitted a new gearbox. While the old one was off I had a look at the clutch and all seemed fine. With the new box in I took it for a test drive. All was fine until I changed from 1st to 2nd after I gave the throttle a good push. I couldn't get into second or any other gear. It felt like the clutch cable had snapped as I could get a gear if I applied light throttle but made no difference when I pushed the clutch.

I've had a look and the clutch cable is pulling the release bearing arm ok, i've tried adjusting the clutch cable right up which has made no difference.

Does it sound like the release bearing has broken?

If that was the case I should be able to at least select one gear shouldn't I?

What gearbox did you remove, and what have you fitted? Did you check that the clutch release fork was the same on both g/boxes?

the box I took of is a 1.6, I've been using it for years but have found the short gearing a bit manic so opted for a 1.9 box. I've never seen the 1.9 box running but was told it was a "good-un".

I didn't check the release forks as the new box came from a 205 so thought it would be the same.

The clutch is a bit of a mish mash tbh, its a ebc friction plate with a standard cover. I've used this with no problem for years. While I had the box off I also inspected the clutch which was fine.

I just find it wierd that it drove and changed gear fine then, nothing.

If it's the release bearing i'd expect that you would get little or no push back on the clutch.

have you tried starting in gear with the clutch held down?

it sounds like a release bearing or clutch arm problem.

I started her up today to get her into the garage. With the engine off I put it into gear then used the starter to get her moving, it started and drove into the garage. So it looks like its definately something to do with the clutch.
