the shaft is stuck in the diff or the engine mount bearing have you taken the hockey bolts out of the bearing? in or out of gear would make no difference on the shaft coming out.

If the hockey bolts are out the way then use something like a small chisel, place it on the intermediate bearing and give it a tap with a hammer..

I recently removed my gearbox, its not evident how the hockey stick bolts work on first glance. Just loosen them until they are a few threads off the end of the bolt, then push them out towards the wheel side of the car. Then looking through the drivers side wheelarch, you should be able to see the offset heads of the bolts behind the driveshaft CV. Turn them 180 degrees, so the heads are facing outwards. Then get under the car and look up at the drive shaft, there is a collar on the shaft on the gearbox side, whack that with a chisel or, what worked for me was a pickle fork!

Remember, never pull the wheel end of the driveshaft, the CV will fall apart!

The hockey bolts are what hold the intermediate drive shaft bearing (the one in the middle of the shaft) into the mount on the bottom of the engine. As discussed above the nut needs to be loosened right to the end of the thread and then the thread turned so the other end is no longer holding the bearing in place.

If the shaft is still stuck, it could just be stuck in the diff., but it's only a spline, nothing else to hold it in other than dirt, so it should come out with a big lever. I had one of mine stuck recently and it took an enormous amount of force to get it out!
