You don't have to remove the bolt completely, only undo it so that it's free of the nut on the alternator (opposite end to pulley) ;)

The bolt is stepped so when you screw it out so far the thinner bit allows the alternator to slot out.

To get my alternator off I had to remove the grille, slam panel, fans and rad to get the right amount of clearance to get it out.

That top bolt is more of an arse when you've just spent 4 days fitting an engine and running gear and then dropped off the engine hoist to the hire shop.

Then when going to fit the alternator realise that you've left that really long bolt out. ;)

Bummer. I'd have settled for a cable tie!

You'll only make that mistake once ;)

I once got a strong friend to lever the engine out of the way with a crowbar (just a few extra mm) to remove the alternator itself on a mi16x4, but with regards to the long bolt; i thought there was a small access hole in the chassis leg/bodywork directly in line to extract it. But maybe thats on 405's, also, my 306 with a 1.9 Mi has an access hole in exactly the right position for this, even though the original engine did not require it at all!
