Non Working Speedo

Recommended Posts

Jer309GTi

The speedo on my XS doesnt work, and I have been checking it to see whats wrong. I'm sure the speedo drive is at fault as the cable is nice and free and the needle moves when you spin the gearbox end of the cable with your fingers.

Is changing the drive a gearbox-out job? Or do you just undo the bolt and it all pulls out? Wasn't sure so didnt want to go ahead and try and it all falls to bits!

Also, is it worth getting a second hand one or get one from Pug? Not sure if this is a common problem with MA boxes or not.

Cheers

If it's the same as a BE gearbox then there is just one bolt on top and it pulls out as one unit.

You may get one from a scrappy as Peugeot would be expensive i'd have thought. Or try ebay.

I'm not sure if they're colour coded depending on the amount of teeth? Might be something to watch out for if getting one from the scrappy if you want your speedo to read correctly. I'm sure someone can confirm this

MA gearboxs do have different speedo drives. The one from my XS box was different to the one in my AX GTI box, same fitting but different gear diameters. They all fit and are easy to remove with the box in place.

they aren't actually expensive from Peugeot if you need a normal non-electric one.

there is a choice of 17 or 18 toothed driven cogs, the drive cog is always 19t in a 205.

total parts are about £14 + vat.

264150 CONTROL SUPPORT 3.92 GBP

264916 CONTROL PINION 6.05 GBP (17 teeth)

264915 CONTROL PINION 6.16 GBP (18 teeth)

264404 TACHOMETER SEAL 4.11 GBP

264512 RING-SEAL 0.40 GBP

one thing I'd be concerned about with an MA box though, is that if the speedo cog has failed, how long till the diff bearings fail? as its play in these that causes the plastic cogs to break/wear out...

I did not list the cable, but when I got one for DrSarty several weeks ago, it was just £23, the shorter lhd cable is £28.
