Newbie With Possible Dumb Question

Recommended Posts

Ok so this is my first Peugeot so please remember I dont know much yet!

1988 1.6GTI -

Was missfiring like hell with revs all over the shop - so changed all plugs leads and dizzy - ticks over real sweet now - no cottage cheese around the plugs and oil looks sound - all around the head is dry as it gets.

Now to the issue -

When I got the foot on the gas and hard cornering the 'STOP' warning light comes on - Usually with the 'Water Temp' Light occasionally with the 'Oil Pressure' Light.

A friend (Expert in his own lunchtime) claims that on 205s this is a sign the head gasket is about to go.

Is he right? Is he wrong? Is there a deffinate conclusion or does the dash just want to be a christmas tree when it grows up? :D

Any help much appreciated - Many thanks in advance!

It comes up when the oil level is too low, also if the engine is overheating. I think it might come up if the coolant is too low but I'm not 100% on that one.

Welcome to the forum

P.s. Tell your mate that a headgasket is either gone or it isn't theres no way of telling if its about to go :D

It sounds like you have some tired connection to the senders. 205's are known for this, it may be when you cornering and accelerating it's moving the wiring abit.

Trace the water sensor and oil pressure sensor and cut back the wiring a little and attach fresh terminals to them. Over time they become contaminated with grease dirt etc and don't contact that well.

If this doesn't work take a look at and clean the earth points, near the headlights and on top of the gearbox.

Last but not least check and clean the brown multiplug situated above the gear box, this is a connection for the senders around the engine to join to the loom.

As i say a pretty typical 205 problem.

There is a good 'brown multiplug' which covers renewing or replacing it.

Hope that helps.
