Top End Rattle

Recommended Posts

skinner2k3

Just run up my engine with a recently rebuild cylinder head that has been shimmed up for a catcam 4900366.

Its very noisy top end, from listening with a screw driver it sounds like it is coming from the dizzy area.

All the caps are torqued down 15Nm as per the haynes manual, the dizzy is not loose and was run with no trouble previously. I checked there was nothing preventing a cap from sitting down fully, is there anything else worth checking that I have missed?

Oh and checked clearances on the shims, all are within the limits quoted in the Haynes with the exception of cylinder 2 and 3 exhaust valves which are under bottom limit 0.28 and 0.33 if I remember correctly. Which in the case of the 0.33 falls within the limits Puma use and the 0.28 with some cam manufacturers limits.

8 valvers, especially when cammed, can be quite rattly!

however I have had a dizzy that was funked internally, I think the springs were long gone and the weights were rattling around inside.

try another known good unit if you can.

Sorted........and the problem was.........

Broken vac advance. Unplugged the vac tube and the rattle disappeared, push it back on rattle comes back. Fitted a spare dizzy and hey presto.

Cheers
