does anyone know how to wire mark 2 rear lights to work on the mark one? if its possible at all.

i got a pre made loom from Graham ( Pugtorque ) on here. Plug and play.

 

I'm actually converting back to phase 1.5 lights so could do a swap on the wiring side?

Yep - get a phase two rear light loom.

Nice and easy then - just plug and play.

that does mean removing the carpet and seats as far as I know, just fitting one of Graham's conversion looms is a lot easier.
