Blocking Starter Ring

Recommended Posts

Kamel6k

I, i'm changing the timing belt from my 1.6 gti. The problem is, i can't "block" the starter ring, to unscrew the alternator pollie and access the timing belt. I've saw in Autodata a special strange tool, but is there any DIY way to do it?

Thanks!

You could stick a breaker bar on the bolt and give the starter a brief whack! That usually works B)

Capn. Pugwash

I did mine yesterday- a flat bladed cold chisel between the ring gear teeth worked a treat B)

It may be to late I have never locked the ring gear, I have always put a spanner on the pully bolt and hit it with a hammer. The shock of the hammer loosens the bolt like an impact gun would do. Saves any damage to the ring gear.
