Some Wiring Queries

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I'm still prepping my car for MOT and whilst waiting on a few parts from some kind folks in here, I have decided to tackle a few wiring problems myself. Firstly, I should state that when I bought the car, it was advertised as a 1.6 with a 1.9 engine installed so I'm guessing some of the issues and photos below are related to the conversion process.

I had a few wires disconnected from the brown multiplug but have attended (I hope) to all but one of these (white no. 3 - oil temp sensor). I have the white wire coming out but no sign of any wire to go in though I have noticed a plug on my sump that has no wire attached to it. Is this the missing wire?

I wired up new driving lamps as the old ones were badly corroded but also unconnected. A previous owner had wrapped both sides wiring in insulating tape and used a cable tie to tie them up out of the way. I have now undoen this and have one light working. I'm going to try fitting new spades on the non-working one as the old ones seem corroded also. However, when I was cutting the cable ties, I noticed another wire also tied up out of the road on the drivers side.

Does anyone know what this is?

It runs into a loom that sits under the radiator and runs the length of it.

In the engine bay itself, I have two plugs that I can't seem to find a home for. The first is this one:

It is attached to the passenger side of the radiator here:

I thought it would attach to this relay:

as there seems to be room for four switches and only three of them are being used but the connector in the relay is for a plug like this one (on the right):

Can anyone enlighten me?

Lastly, I also have no home for this (red) plug:

It comes from a loom that runs round the back of the front washer bottle (as in the first pic).

Again, can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks in advance.

Paddy

Hi Paddy,

I'll try to help out with the ones I think I know.

Pic 1. - Not sure what that is, good start :)

Pic 2. - Pretty sure thats the fan testing plug so just leave it where it is.

Pic 3. - Thats your radiator thermoswitch screwed into the radiator with the wires coming out of it, tells your fan when to come on.

Pic 4. - Thats not a relay, thats your shunt box, it should be bolted to the back of your slam panel with two long 10mm bolts, you can see the holes where the bolts go through the shunt box in the pic.

Pic 5. - As above.

Pic 6. - I think the red plug is a diagnostics plug so don't worry about that either, just tuck it out of the way as its never used.

Hope that helps!

#1 is a connection for the brake pad wear sensor. Normally it's clipped to the rubber brake hose and connected to a short length of wire with a metal pin in the brake pad. When the pads wear out the pin contacts the disc, which is earthed through the strut, and a warning light comes on on the dash.

#2+3 is the test plug for the fan switch. It doesn't connect to anything, but shorting out pairs of pins should make the radiator fan come on at low or high speed.

#4+5 isn't a relay, it's the shunt box - a distribution point for all the various positive connections. There's one going to the main fusebox under the dash, one for the fan, and iirc one for the ECU.

Not sure about the last one, but I don't think it connects to anything.

Cheers guys and happy days - two diagnostic plugs to not worry about now, one shunt box to attach properly to the slam panel (mind you my K&M may be in the road which may explain why its sitting loose), and given that I just discovered last week that the drivers side strut is the wrong strut for the car, that explains why the sensor cable was tied up out of the road. One job to do when I get the correct strut.

Thanks again and apologies for sounding like an idiot but I'm on my apprenticeship with this car. :)

First plug looks like the brake pad warning plug. Wouldn't worry about this.

Last two are for the headlamp dim-dip ballast. Wouldn't worry about that either!

Pic 5, The plug is for the fan loom which connectors into the Fuse box

Not to hijack but just wondering what should go into the shunt box?

I have one thick wire with ring terminal that comes from the loom connected to the battery positive and attaches to the end of the shunt box.

And then next to that one corroded ring terminal with no wire attached.... Should something else be connected there???

No, just a positive wire from the battery connects to the end of the shunt box.
