Diesel Back Axle

Recommended Posts

i was at the local scrappies yesterday , and spotted a 2 door 205 up on top of a pile of cars. i got the forklift guy to get it down so i could check the back axle for play, RESULT, the axle seems fine, so i whipped it off. also got 4 steel 13 inch XS type wheels with legal 165/70 13's,(could do with a coat of paint) all for the pricley sum of £32...................... :)

has a diesel axle got heavier torsion bars to standard ?

my gtx has been lowered at the back, and there is a bit of play in the bearings so i will try this axle sometime, just wanted to know if the non gti axles are all the same

it wont be anything special from a diesel model, no play in the bearings is not an indication of everything is fine though, it could still be beyond repair, though at £32 its worth stripping apart and using all the good bits at the very least.

only some vans, not a base model one, even the STDT didn't have particularly high spec.

it could be 18.1, 18.5 or 18.9mm diameter torsion bars, and either No anti roll bar, 14mm, or 16mm.

gti's had 18.9mm torsion bars and a 19mm ARB.

i understand the anti roll bar (if fitted) is inside the axle tube , is this right ? is there an easy way to check if there is one fitted without pulling it to bits ?

If you show us a picture of the ends of the beam we can tell you if it has an anti roll bar or not.

My Gti used to have a diesel rear beam, don't know if it had been poorly adjusted at some point or what but it say way high at the back.
