Mi Engine Angle (tilt)

Recommended Posts

Wrighty_1988

Hey, ive decided to go down the route of using bike carbs for starters with my project. Most likely cos it costs bugger all lol.

Whilst ive got some time at work id like to be making the manifold for them but the engine isnt in at the moment. Im in the understanding that the bottoms of the carbs have to be level so if anyone knows id like to know the angle of tilt the engine has on the inlets so i can mock up what im making. Hoepfully ive made sense ;). Im using zzr1100 carbs if anyone is interested aswell.

Thankies.

Ruddy hell, quick response and surprised someone knew ;). Thankies very much. I had just come on to say id figured out a way of measuring it myself. But this saves the work ;).

I WAS going to level off the engine by propping it up and making the underside of the mounting arm leveland then measuring from there.

It's common knowledge, all XU's are 30degree, a quick search anywhere would've found that out.

And for the record, of course do what you like, but i'd strongly advise p!ssing around with bike carbs.

Is that advise against Baz? The wording didn't sound quite right and I've heard a few people moaning about bike carbs. Never about Jenvey or Webbers though. I'm more of an ITB man myself, but then you have to spend a fair bit on the ECU etc.

Apologies yes well spotted Oz, that was meant to say 'advise against' them!

Having gone down the route of bike carbs I'll have to agree with Baz and advise against them. They are an absolute pain to set up and get working properly and by the time / IF you get them right, they will have cost you more in time and money than a proper carb setup.

LE: if you're going to have the float bowls level with the ground they will pop through the bonnet, that's if you keep the inlet port shape the same as the std inlet manifold.

How do you mean the inlet port shape?,

This is what ive made so far, inlets need a bit of die grinding to make perfect. but with the understanding of the engine being 30degrees and i measured the carbs when they were level and the carb inlets are at 25degrees, so to save messing about i was just going to use straight pipe.

Not welded though, im going to make individually mounted pipes that are bolted on and either a gasket ring or o ring groove. Ill have to use short pipes though because of what you say.

If you have the time/materials/skill to sort the bike carbs then its a good project. I was looking into it, but prefered, for a small amount more money (which i found well worth it when i looked at time Vs money) the weber setup, which to me looks and functions more professionaly. I used Megajolt for the spark, which is cheap, search it and look at trigger-wheels.com for prices. I think, personaly, this was the easiest and best setup, apart from throttle bodies of course which are better but more expensive. I had a Mi and now a Gti6 on this set up and even driving in traffic its a great car. Where you get it all set up will make a differance.

Its nice to see someone going for the bike set up, its just it takes more faffing and care to make this bike setup work. If you have the time etc then go for it! I presume you have looked at Bogg Bros? If not then look them up.

Hope this helps

Matt

Yeh i have seen the bogg bro's website, but i work at a massive factory as an electrician so i have the free roam of the many machines at work lol. I always like to make my own things. Because its a project car aswell im not bothered if it takes some extra faffing.

Hi Mate,

I've got zzr 1100 carbs on my MI and it runs really good.

Starts from cold no problem and pulls trough the rev range perfectly.

I did just re jet them though,I fitted a AFR gauge and it was running pretty rich.

Ignition wise, I have a H&H distributer that they rebuilt and reweighted to suit my car.

Anyway I'd say go for it has to be worth a shot,As I say,Mines go's good and sounds suoerb
