Hey all well a friend has had my 205 gti now in his garage for over a month fitting various bits and sorting other things that needed doing the main thing being the starting problem of it cranking over for ages before it fires.

He reckoned he recently figured out the problem and it lied in the fuel pressure regulator said mine was fubar he showed me this as when it finally fired up he clamped the pressure regulator hose and the car didn't splutter and cut out idled nicely. I since bought another standard fpr of a memeber on here told was working hooked that one up and its still cranking for ages before firing (2 possible duff fprs?). He now is trying to fit an adjustable fuel pressure regulator hoping this will solve the problem, guess he is going to up the pressure on the regular, anyone think this will work?

any other ideas?

thanks.

Id try testing the fuel pressure before farting about with all this. Not saying it is fuel pressure at all, just test before replace. Check ignition timing, plug cond/gaps. Does it smell of fuel/does it flood?

Possible injector(s) stuck open. Causing fuel to drain whislt shut off, depressurising the rail causing excessive cranking untill the pressure/supply builds up again.

Or maybe a knackered non return valve in the pump housing? (think thats where it is anyways?).

I recently had my injectors serviced, cured my excessive cranking

some great news after all this time! been to my mates garage today we been tinkering with it again figuring out this excessive cranking. First of tried starting it but still just cranking over so he tried advancing and retarding ignition while cranking still nothing, Next we looked at the ecu temp sensor wiring which frankly seen better days so he got another terminal and sorted wiring out soldering here and there tried turning her over again still nothing.

I suggested we need to think about the actual ecu temp sensor getting a used one so he said he'll try and source one but I said i'll go away and try get a used one, on way home thought sod it nipped into GSF bought a new temp sensor went back to garage mate was busy so I whipped of the old sensor and plopped on the new one got in cockpit pushed the button and pretty much straight away LIFE! was shocked didn't think that little sensor cause so much hassle! running well needs afew tweaks here and there idle etc... but well chuffed it sprung into life near enough on button :)

I cannot believe such alittle part can cause so much pain now I know why every problem starting post people say get a new temp sensor :)

so I am guessing what was happening is the ecu couldn't read the sensor so was dumping all the fuel and flooding it or something?
