Engine Removal A Couple Of Questions

Recommended Posts

flipperthebushkangaroo

As per the title really am in the process of removing my engine to changethe box over and tidy up the bay, also going to try to make a new engine loom while it's apart!!!!

So the questions,(i have used the search but can't find the right info)

  1. What is the best way to disconnect the throttle cable?
  2. the distributer is loose with the top nut missing (the engine was running well before) what do i need to check when putting nuts back and getting car running again?
  3. how do the contacts come out of the connectors in the engine bay and who supplies them?
  4. are there any potential WHOOP's that i need to be aware of?
  5. is it ok to lash the engine with a strap or rope to lift it or is there a better way?

Well thats all the questions for now, but i reserve the right to come at you with more as the job continues!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance

Roddie

Well, im not going to be of much use here other than for question 5. The Engine has two lifting 'eyes' to be used with an engine hoist, chain or strap to these, They are located between the rocker cover and fuel rail kind of area on either end of the head. Sorry i couldnt help with the rest!

  1. What is the best way to disconnect the throttle cable?

Pull the throttle fully open from inside the bonnet and hold the mechanism - cable then goes slack and you can slip the cable nipple out of the side

  2. the distributer is loose with the top nut missing (the engine was running well before) what do i need to check when putting nuts back and getting car running again?

Rotate the dizzy fully clockwise, then back so about 7mm of the sdjusting slot is visible - should be close and they're not too fussy just to run (obv. adjust properly once running)

  3. how do the contacts come out of the connectors in the engine bay and who supplies them?

I usually pry the wire clips from both sides to release -

  4. are there any potential WHOOP's that i need to be aware of?

Pretty much as Haynes say (for a change)

  5. is it ok to lash the engine with a strap or rope to lift it or is there a better way?

As long as it's tightly tied - old seat belts are great can bolt through the lifting eyes

With a timing strobe. Alternatively (and this is how I do mine) set it how steve said, then drive in 5th gear low revs + Big hill. Advance the dizzy a bit and repeat the hill. Keep doing this untill it pinks, then back off the dizzy a fraction so it doesnt pink anymore.
