Valve Guide Wear

Recommended Posts

Alan_M

Just double checking my guides on the D6C head, and the up & down play in the guide is surprising.

According to the rebuild book, it appears the maximum play on the bore of the guide is 0.022mm. Mine look like 0.5mm. Will have to wait till Friday so I can 'borrow' my dial gauge from work.

Thats with the valve about 5mm off the seat by the way.

Can someone confirm for me?

The Haynes manual gives large tolerances in the book. Not that they're wrong as they are in there to account for a used engine. Everything will still work with loads of play in Valve guide or cam clearances. But it depends how noisy you want the engine to sound.

It's usually the exhaust valve guides suffer the most and it made a huge difference changing mine.

The brass guides themselves are quite cheap. But it's best to let a machine shop do the work.
