Coolant Temp Sensor Help.

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Picked up a E Reg 1.6 Gti Phase 1.5 and a few thinks have been bodged on it :) the coolant temp connector has been removed and the main fan has been wired up to run all the time when the engine is on. I plugged the block back into the sensor on the rad but the gauge on the dials didn't want to work so I'm guessing I need a new one. Also can anyone also identify the connector on the right that's down by the spot light. Never seen it before and not sure what it does.

It's probably been bodged to run the fan constantly because the rad temp switch has given up.

Check and clean up the "brown multiplug" if the gauge isn't working.

The brown plug in your photo is the fan test plug. It's not used.

That metal cylinder looks like a headlight resistor or the fan speed resistor (there's two that look the same)

Id re-wire as much as you can. It's straight forward enough to do once you know what to connect to what. Use the link from Rich.

Replace the brown multiplug with something else too (i.e. bullet connectors) and fresh wiring.

It actually gave me more oil pressure on the gauge when I did mine!

It would be the fan speed relay. everything in the picture is all part of the same loom. none of it was plugged in, so need to try and get a new sensor for the radiator.

brown plug shown is simply a diagnostic test connector for the cooling fan system.

I would get a new fan switch and you should be fine as long as the earth is good too.

your gauges have nothing whatsoever to do with the fan thermoswitch.

Welshpug is correct, the sensor for your water temp gauge is seperate, that is one of the two sensors on the back of the engine under the dizzy. Cant remember which is which but one gives the signal to the water temp gauge, the other brings the STOP light on when temp reaches 105 or 110 deg.

The fan is controlled by a seperate sensor fitted in the side of the radiator, which should just control the cooling fan.
