Distributor Knocking Sound

Recommended Posts

lemmingzappa

I've never noticed this before, so i'm not sure if it's normal or not. But there seems to be a knocking sound coming from the distributor, quite a distinct tap.

Any ideas ?

Knackered vacum advance. Try pulling the hose off. Just had this with mine.

a bit more info...

Try taking the dizzy off, mark it, and undo the bolts, check for oil ingress coming from the camshaft oil seal.

Remove the hose going to the dizzy and suck on the vacuum take off it looks like a little flying saucer... if you can suck on it, the diaphragm is punctured, and you won't be getting the vacuum advance.

I'm not sure how the dizzy would be making noise unless the advance has become unhooked internally... it might slap against the arm and rattle.

mine does this on tickover and I've been told the weights and vac advance are the culprits. So I've ordered one from H&H, should be here in a weeks time, all ready for Cadwell on the 7th July hopefully

What spec dizzy did you order MrG? Might give them a call today as I am having some distributor related grief at the moment.

its a std dizzy thats been sorted (or re-weighted) to run with the webers, the head work and the cam. Give them a call, well recommended they were.

Haveing tinkered with my engine last night I retract my previous statement, my distributor was making a knocking sound not because the vac advance was broken, the opposite in fact. It was because the vac advance was working but only connected to one inlet and I assume recieving a pulsed vac.

Well the hose which is attached to the vacuum advance slides around even though it was jubilee clipped on tightly. There seemed to be oil/grease on the takeoff so I dried it off with a cloth but I still can't get it to grip fully.

I also tried sucking on the hose when I had it attached as best I could and it didn't resist. Dead advance ?

Can that part be bought seperately from the distributor itself as I know they are over £100 as a whole ?

Ok - got a bit of a noisy dizzy too, noticed it this evening - if the vac unit HAS gone, could somone please tell me what effect this would have on performance / economy ?

Thanks guys - even though it goes wrong on a regular basis, 8 months in and still lovin' the car (when it all works) and smilin' all the way !!

Oh, and one of the most informative and friendly fora I've used - whatever I think is a "new" problem, someone has invariably had it before !

Well I checked out all the Pug part numbers with my local dealer and none of them are available. So i'm hoping to get a local Bosch supplier to order part number:

1 237 123 181 (1.6 GTi Vac Unit)
