Fast Flashing Indicator

Recommended Posts

i have a weird problem...

all the indicators were working fine until i took the car out for a drive round the block, came back and now the passenger side flashes fast??

i know usually when there is a fault on the circuit they do this but seeing as all the bulbs are working fine, i'm stumped?

they work fine on the hazard too

relay fault?

If its not the relay its probably a bad earth.

Yes, it usually has a plastic wrapping round it. It looks like a plug fitment. Its at the inner side, rad side of the front panel.

The plastic wrapping around the earth connectors on my car was fall of water. I ended up cutting out the block and putting rings on the ends of the earth cables (with solder connectors and heat-shrink) and just bolted the straight to the car works better then ever before now. :D

i have replaced that block anyway with a screw in type thing boltes to the chassis so maybe the wire has come loose?

right i have changed the relay and it still does it grrrr.

next check is the earths then, are all the indicators earthed in the same place??

and will all the bulbs still light if it has a bad earth?? should i check resistance on the earths to localize it?

im trying to get it ready for the mot next week and little bits keep popping up, its a pain in the arse

this i driving me nuts

i have run a good earth direct to each bulb yet it still it flashes fast?

is this an mot failure ? surely as long as they all flash or must it be a set speed?

It might be worth checking all the bulbs are the correct wattage, if one or more are underpowered I suppose that would speed the flashing up.

IIRC there is a MOT failure test point related to indicator flashing speed, it has to be between 60-120 in a minute or something.

sounds spot on if the bulb isnt producing enough resistance then it will seem like a bulb has gone so just check them all ,And it is an mot fail

i'll have alook but i'm sure it was working fine then i went for a spin round the block and when i came back it was doing it??

that side is from a 309 though from the scrappy (complete bulb holder and bulb) so i dont know if that will make a difference?

failing that i am going to have a look at the hazard switch as looking at the haynes wiring diagram all the control of the flashers (even the indicators) come from there. i have changed the switch for a 405 one so it could be a dodgy wire behind there.

and your both right it is an mot fail it must be between 60-120 flashes per min.

I'd try the hazzard switch, as you have said all the indicator wiring passes through it and they can cause some quite strange faults

Have you looked at the condition of the light itself?

My passenger side rear light is giving me indicator problems and its due to the board itself (where bulbs and wires connect to) being corroded.

There's the metal plate thing which runs the power through to the light sockets , this has rusted quite badly in places on mine and is causing erratic indicators. (sorry now this is the drivers side i dont have a pic of the other to show the rusty bits)

I've used the rear light off my van and it clears this problem up, might be worth trying a different light?

i did take a quick look at the rear light, but it was getting dark and i couldnt actually figure out how to remove the light assembly

gold star for jackherer

turns out the bulb is the fault. the one from the 309 is fine but for some reason the original is playing up.

i switched the bulbs around and the fault followed, could just be a missmatch as one was huge and one was tiny.

i'll grab a new pair today.

cheers guys
