Turbo Owners, Who Did You Use For Stepper Seals?

Recommended Posts

craig f90

Hello again,

Just been talking to midland turbo centre about stepper seals, who rebuilt my turbo 18 months ago. But they dont seem to have a clue what im talking about. Seemed more vacant than i am about this.

Ive tried mesh in the down pipe and in the back box to no avail. Also changed the oil to a 5/40. So steppered seals seem to be the only cure.

So what im asking is who would you recommend? feel free to scare me with a rough price.

Many thank you's,

Craig.

That Would be ace. But I can't stretch the finances that far at the moment. Sounds like an impressive setup though.

I hope so. Mot expires soon. Rumour has it they do.

Can't see owt on here or google to prove it but I hope they do. Had the turbo built to standard spec and it lasted a month more than the warranty.

Is yours being a bugger too?

I've been at mine twice this weekend. You won't find a speck of mayo in them. Taken it out for a few good runs and it still smokes. Midland turbo centre advised me to check them too. But they were pretty clean before. One thing I noticed was the pipes are rock hard.

I've searched the forum for a long time over the past week regarding the breather system on the XU engine but found very little about improving or mod

ifng them. How would you do them sounds of silence?

Thank you.

also had the valve stem seals replaced on mine and didnt help one bit which then pointed to the turbo and all this other stuff to do with the seal etc, would it not help fitting a cat to the exhaust? i haft to do this anyway for mot purposes as my engine is going in a 306 which is 1997 therfore needing emissions test

Mine never smoked and I had a 2.5" single box system, I think if you keep having the issues even when changing the turbo then that is pretty blatantly a sign that something else is causing it.

As Sounds of Silence said check your breather system is not bunged up anywhere as that will increase crankcase pressure.

Edited to add - Admittedly the breather system on the xu10 is quite complicated so I don't know what to suggest regarding where to start looking - just follow the pipework through.

Does the breather actually spit much oil out after a hard run? Mine always used to spew a little bit out but it never smoked from the exhaust even when sat idling for ages.

Not to sure jonny if a cat will help but if you need one then I hope it works for your 306. Rob turbo had issues with his 306 turbo. But he never said how he cured it. May as well rip the breathers up the week end. My engine didn't smoke in the de cat 406. Just in the 2o5

i bought a f reg 2L turbo 205 few months ago of piston heads it was smoking like hell on idle but not on boost? I tried an xm turbo which also smoked and caught steering knuckle, So i sent the 406 turbo off to universal turbos and asked for a step seal, 360 degree bearing and a bigger blade i put it all back together it now boosts lovely and no smoke what so ever from exzaust after a little blast to clear the back box out, its 2.5" poss 3" sinlge system is this better or worse? than something smaller i know one thing its loud as hell!!

Hi you need to start off with the basics and find some one round your area that can carry out a leak down test for you, this will check the condition of bores/rings and the valve seats, now assuming all that is 100% ok and there is no leakage past the pistons.

You then need to make sure that the breathers are clear, easiest way to achieve this is to phsyicaly remove the pipes and clean them out one by one, another usefull thing to do if its smoking badly at idle is to undo the oil filler cap and make sure its happy to just rest in the top of the filler kneck and not jump around.

Failing all of this then plain and simple the turbos shot, we have had two rebuilt turbos both of which leaked oil from the exhaust side, the company that did them for us assured us that all was well etc etc and in the end after taking the second one back they finally gave us a third unit and all's been fine since, we have run a 2.5" exhaust and have just upgraded to a 3" from the turbo all the way back no issues with smoking at all, We use CR turbo engineering really nice helpfull people who do know what they are talking about and dont charge a fortune, had a few turbos reconned by them and only ever had a prob on this occasion.

Hope this helps

Cheers for the futher info/advice guys. Haven't been on it this week. Buggered my eye. It did seem to. Stop with the oil cap off. Ill get it tested like whizzer advised if it fails to stop smoking. Thank you

The reason you can't get much info on stepper seals is cause they are called staggered seals!!!!!! :)

Carbon staggered seals is what I had in my T34 on my Cosworth :)

They suffer through leaking exhaust seals if you fit a performance exhaust to a car thats been running a standard exhaust system for a while B)
