1.8 16v 306 Convetible Gearbox

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what other models that they fit the gearbox from a 306 convertible on? Reason being is that I'm currently building a gti6 205 and fancied a 1600 be box to mate to my gti6 lump. But I own a convertible as stated above and the gearbox has VERY similar ratios on the bottom as the 1600 gti box and is slightly longer geared on the top end which is absolutely perfect for me, also I am much more likely to find a box in better condition than some of the old 1600 gti box out there. I can also just use my normal push type mi16 clutch with it so would be a winner.

I have yet to see what other models they fit these boxes to though! Would make life easier for me while searching for one. Thanks .

Ben

Much appreciated.

i did have a search on here to see id anyones used the xsi box on the gti6 engine but couldnt find anything.

Well that's a start, thanks mate. Some xsis use a pull type ? Am I right or are they all a push type like mine? I'm hoping they are all like mine because I have a chance of getting a real good conditon box with good decent ratios. Thanks and let me know if you find any info and I will do the same vice verser.

i think the xsi is a pull type just like the gti6, and the old school 8v boxes are push.

or is it the other way round

I don't know to be honest !!! What I'm thinking though is that the 1800 they've put in my phase 2.5 convertible is from an xsi and therfore the gearbox is also from it, just as you said earleir. I think they did a 2.0 16v , 20.8v and a 1.8 16v Xsi . The 1.8 8v was the xs. I'm sure the 2.0 models were pull type like the gti6.

. The rest are a normal push type. I'm going to try and get hold of one of these boxs. But the ratios may be different from a different size engine :s.

Pherhaps someone with a bit of greater knowledge could shed some light on this one for us ????

Thanks for that mate think you just answered my question! Can you tell me if they put the 1.8 16v into xsis aswell? Mine has a normal push type which is fitted to my cabriolet.

Thanks mate

As far as i know it was only the 2 litre jobby but  that might only be on the phase 2 xsi's....

i've got a 2.0 xsi box fitted to my gti6 but its from a phase 1 306. had to swap one of the leavers over from the original 1600 gti box which was a pain but apart from that its a straight fit.

i done this as i wanted a longer ratio 5th as well because i didnt want it screaming on dual carriageways but i read somewhere that the box has quite short ratios and that the 1900 gti had longer ratios <_<

so i've got myself an S16 box as well. not sure what the ratios are like though.
