Broken Clutch Cable

Recommended Posts

muddatrucker

So, I'm pretty certain my clutch cable just broke on my final corner to work, heard a snap/pop and the peddle dropped to the floor. I've managed to cruise it just outside, so made it to work.

I do have a spare cable with the old clutch in the boot but I'm not confident enough to change it myself. There's several garages in pushing distance but does anyone know how much such a replacement will cost? Including a new cable if necessary? I know its relative but a heads up would help me out!

It's a little fiddly but easily do-able. Hardest bit is getting the end to hook onto pedal.

Loosen/pull the cable on the gearbox and extract out of way. Bit that goes through clutch arm etc.

I think there's a clip holding it on subframe.

Stick head under dash drivers side and you'll see the pedal box.

Pull out insulation cr@p

Stick your finger in above clutch pedal and you'll feel where it's suppose to hook on to.

May take 2 people from experience, the cable went 3 times in total on my old 1.1. Still don't know why it went so many times.

After it went exactly a week to the hour and minute after the crash in the GTI, I got rid of it. Spooky

Thanks for swift replies, if the car was at home, I'd probably give it a go, but its outside my chav infested workplace so I'll push it to the garage before I go into work tomorrow.

Any ideas on a reasonable price? I've got an 'orrible kwikfit opposite or some independents on the other side which I'd favour.

taking the old cable off gives you a perfect idea of how to put the new one on. its the first job i ever did on my pug when i got it as its the first thing that broke. (and i wasnt mechnical back then)! its easy.

Hmmm briefly tried and failed today, got old cable off, kind of forgotten where the other end came off (or at least how it attaches), struggling to work out how the 'eye of a needle' part connects to the peddle also. I'll try again at 6, my Haynes manual is very vague.

you'll work it all out and get it done in the end, put the pedal end on first is my only advice its a tad fidly but it is do-able.

I'm glad you're giving it a go and not just throwing money at it to get it fixed. you'll earn alot more respect doing that!

Still can't get it working, its attached, pedal is slack, cable tied it to the subframe. Pushed to two garages both full, got answerphone to mobile mechanic, isn't ironic that the next nearest place is the scrapyard!

Is it an earlier model with lift up reverse by first? If so have you got the approx. 30mm long metal rod between the clutch arm and the cable bracket? Chances are it was lost on the road when your cable snapped.
