Help! Mi16 On 45's Set Up Advise Required Please

Hi Guys,

I have just had a replacement MI16 engine fitted to my car after blowing the last one on a track day last year.

The car seems to be misfiring badly, but the car pops and bangs on acceleration and on the overrun, and i've been told it may be overfueling rather than misfiring, any ideas?

The difference between the engines is small, no headwork! however it has had a 421 manifold and a lightened flywheel during the engine swap.

As ever, any help would be great!

Rob :P

Are the carbs mounted with springs on the manifold studs at the carbs and are you using thackery washers? This kind of thing can be caused by fuel getting frothed up in the float chambers if they are 'solid' mounted.

If they came off an engine of the same spec then in theory they should be fueled close enough to run.

Have you checked that the carbs are still balanced ? It's also common for the retaining srews to come loose and interupt the flow of fuel throught the venturi, I'd check them, they're under the barrel of the carb.

If you don't have a synchrometer for checking the balance you can undo the cap covering the progression holes on top of each barrel near the back, Move the throttle until the butterfly just covers the progression hole, now check the other carb to make sure the butterflys are at the same point.

If they are different adjust the balance bar in the middle of the two carbs which joins them. Then once you have them even across both carbs you will need to adjust the idle stop to suit.

The progression holes are just infront of the idle mixture screws;

That's certainly give me something to go at, thanks!

The car also has a dizzy adapter and i'm told this is a very crude way of running an mi16 in a 205, What are the benefits of running a 16v ignition?

I would assume the benefits are the ignition curve would be more suited to the engine.

If your engine is standard'ish I would have thought you could just get a replacement Dizzy that has the correct curve ?

I've heard of others using this place ;
