Reusable Parts Xs To Mi16

Recommended Posts

Wrighty_1988

Hey, as some of you know i recently went to look at an Mi16 engine. I ended up buying the engine as to me it looked in okay condition and the guy had a genuine reason for not using it, meaning his mint 309 he two lovely baby seats in it and his garage was full of toys lol.

My question is, is there any parts from in my xs engine bay that could help me. The engine came with pipes and general other things, but it didnt come with a starter or alternator. Could i perhaps use any of these with the Mi or does it have to be GTi spec?. Cheers

The stem seals are the same! but i suspect that information isnt much use to anyone! Aside from that i fear that pretty much everything will have to be GTI or Mi spec. Although you can get a starter off of more or less any XU engine, shouldnt be too hard to track down. It may not be want you want to hear, but the general concensus is that its better to start off with an XU engined 205, either a GTI or a diesel. The TU ones do present alot more challenges, then if you want a challenge....

Regards

Sam

I chose an XS for it to be a surprise to other people on the road lol. I know what im getting into though but i have already got the gti subframe, shafts, hubs, brakes etc all together ready to be bolted onto the car. The engine is going to be run on carbs to which i have already got all of the adaptors and gti bits for that.

Im not in a bad place really, most things ive got its now just other things with regards the engine and the suspension is to come.

With regards to the engine, i was pretty much expecting for the parts to be no good for the mi16, but hey ho lol. ill just have to get a wanted add up for the starter and alternator with their brackets included.

Yes, i can see the appeal of having a 205 xs then surprising people with mi16 power. One slight issue though might be that you will have to add the gti wheel arches, or the euro rallye ones because all the gti running gear will give you a wider track and Mr MOT man wont enjoy it with the wheels protruding from the arches, what a killjoy he is!

Thats a good point lol, ive been looking at those euro rallye arches for a while and and that might just have made my mind up. I finding it hard to find any other wide arches than the two you mentioned though, well, i can find them but i dont fancy paying most of the prices places want.

Depending on the age of your XS the engine mounts could be in the wrong place so it won't fit without major surgury to move the offside drivers top mount.

I typed 205 XS engine into google and found this information

"The 205 XS had twin Weber carbs and 79bhp XY8 engine from August '86 (C reg to early E reg) to the Solex twin choke single carb and 85bhp TU3 engine from December '87 to 1991 (late E reg to J reg). Many of the XSs around are E to H reg as this was the height of their popularity with the new engines; though sadly many succumb to accidents from over-enthusiastic driving."

I have a G reg one that had a solex carb, am i correct in thinking this is the one i am okay with?

Yeah, yours is the TU; so that should be alright. I've never seen the XY engine to be honest.

With regards to the arches, its a shame you have to put any on at all because it slightly spoils the idea of having an XS sleeper, since the arches will give away that its not standard, but then again only a 205 nut would really notice. And in my opinion the euro rallye was (and is) the best looking 205 they ever made, far better than a gti, so even if you lose the standard XS look at least its being changed to something better!

Yours will be TU engined, XY8 is old school with gearbox in the sump and looks like this:

GTI6BOY's mega rallye has the required work done to fit an XU engine: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?s...=90187&st=0

as per the wheels you can get 306 steel rims that fit and wont stick out i seen it on a cj turbo gti running gear and gti 6 front brakes, steel rims kept it sleeper style unless you get them banded
