Servicing

So after fixing lots of other bits on my 1.9 Gti, its now time to give it a thorough service. Can anyone give me a good supplier for parts, are GSF any good? Autofive seem overly expensive...

So far I figured I need

-Oil Filter (and oil, what type would be best? mineral or semi-synthetic?)

-Sump Plug washer

-Timing belt

-Coolant

-Brake fluid

Is there anything else that I should be considering? The car hasn't been run much for a few years after all. Any help is appreciated

-Sam

I recommend GSF and you will also need a new fuel filter. Also gearbox oil.

Oil, try oil man member on here or Opie oils web site, they will give advice on which oil to use.

For the oil filter, your better off getting one from Pug as they have the one-way valve. Semi-synthetic oil, most people tend to use 10-40W.

(copper) Sump plug washer, you'll get one free from pug if you ask nicely while getting the filter ;)

worth while changing the water pump while the belts off.

I've orderd stuff from GSF in the past and sometimes it not OE

Cool, cheers for the help guys. I've ordered a few bits already so I'll probably end up having to order a water pump aswell, ah well lol.

Cam belt

Cam belt tensioner

Water pump

Probably discs and pads too.

You should get all of that from GSF but if not there is a place called Motex in Widford industrial estate that are good, their prices are lower than GSF normally, especially for things like batteries. www.motexgroup.com

Might be worth looking at the tyres as well as they maybe perished

Yeah, going to replace those too; the ones on there are budget and old. I planned to use some Toyo T1R's as i had these on my old clio and they were pretty good in the dry (bit less so in the wet but hey), do most people use 195's or the standard 185's?

195 / 50 / 15

I use TR1's, I think there good value for money but they wear quick and also lose alot of grip in the wet.

The eagle's are supposed to be better but never tried them.

If you search for "Tyres" there is loads of thread's :(

Don't forget they flexipipes as well mine had been on SORN for 5 years when I bought it, so when I did the brake fluid I took the opportunity to upgrade to Goodridge brake hoses. It's worth checking over all the rubber hoses.

I replaced my crappy budget tyres with Bridgestone Turanza ER 300s and have been very impressed although I'm on 185/60 x 14 as I have a 1.6

good advice re checking over the rubber parts carefully - i'd do the full inspection service as well and be careful over coolant hoses, brake seals, suspension bushes, etc
