Fan Not Working. How To Make Manual Switch

Recommended Posts

grantley1988

Im by no means a mechanic so bare with me! Having not had the car long and im slowly starting to find the faults with with tin can :D this one being that the fan not coming on.

As the weather is getting hotter and traffic combined the temp gauge is going up so it needs to be sorted asap.

Firstly how can i find out if the fan is working?

Secondly, if it is working can i run a set of wires towards the dash and have a switch there to turn it on and off?

Reason for the manual switch is im driving to birmingham friday and just incase i hit traffic on the motorway i do not want to be overheating!

Hope you can help

mines running on a manual switch.

you will need a relay to switch the high current going to the fan. i cant remember if the std fan is run on switched earth or switched live? but either way you will need a 4 pin relay to turn it on.

I'd just add, use the correct cable on the main feed to suit the current drawn by the fan 17Amps 28/0.30. You can use light cable 5.55Amp 9/0.30 for your switch to the relay coil. You could also put a fan-on warning light in circuit as well.

As I have recently had my knuckles rapped for advertising I'll not mention any suppliers here but if I can help you either on that score or with wiring up the relay etc please send me a PM.

p.s I forgot to mention that it is a good idea to take the feed through the ignition so that you can't leave the fan running accidently. Also, the feed must be fused and sufficient for the fan load.

The temp switch in the radiator will have probably failed. Easy to replace.

There's a fan test plug in the engine bay. It will be floating near the slam panel on the passenger side. Bridge the middle female pin to one of the two outers for half or full speed.

Easier than bodging a manual switch as you need a relay ideally.

Would you happen to know the colour of the wires and the colour of the plug? Thakns for your help. Will have a look when I get home from work tonight.

As has been said, for a road car I'm not sure of the value/hassle of putting in a manual switch when all you really need to do is replace the thermostatic switch in the side of the rad and presto, it's all working again (most likely). As above, it shorts two connections - one is half speed, the other is full, so it's pretty each to quickly test if the fan itself works.

There's a few members down here, and several more 205 Gtis running about. Just a shame I no longer have a 205

Rad temp switch is easy to change, it's got a blue base beneath the plug.

Just remember to drain a little bit of coolant out :)

Have you tried giving the plug a good wiggle and cleaning the connectors?

The wires can often perish

Did just that today and its working now. Im the worrying type so this could all be for nothing. I took a pic of the temp at its highest point

That was in traffic and it got a tiny bit higher than that which is when i finished my journey and when i stopped and got out the fan was working  on its slow setting.

I assume the fan kicks in around this point??

Does the above seem fine. Should i be worried at that temp? or should i get a new stat which kicks in at a lower point?

Mine came on at about that temp too. Funnily enough, the fan often used to come on about 5 mins after i'd stopped, heatsoak most likely.

Miles fitted a new thermostat (not fan switch) in mine and the car generally ran a little bit cooler.
