Good Engine Builders In Or Near Bristol?

Recommended Posts

Hiya Guys

I was wondering if anyone knew of any places in or near Bristol that can rebuild Mi16 engines. Or if there is anyone on this forum who lives near by and would like to help out a fellow forum member for a few ££ and Beer/Cider?

Story behind this question…

I bought an Mi16 engine off a member on here a few years ago being told that I would only need to put the head back on I went for it and spent £400 on the engine.

On closer inspection with my old flatmate who regularly builds engines it turned out that it needed a bit more than that.

So we striped the whole thing down and it was a mess. I bought all the necessary rebuild parts from QEP and started work. My old flatmate helped me out as we worked through it as this was my first engine rebuild.

The bottom end has been completely rebuilt. This involved having the crack polished and measured, new shells for big ends and small ends, new gaskets for the sump, new piston rings and rehoned liners (the piston rings and liners were done by QEP)

So now I’m up to rebuilding the head. The valves are still all in place and look ok. So I’ve not taken them out. I did rebuild the lifters and new cams were needed so I got a pair of a member on here. Everything else is waiting to go back in.

Unfortunately my flatmate has not been available for the last few months. He’s getting rid of his lockup so I need to collect the engine and parts from him soon. I’ve also completed the rest of my car has, so this is the only thing left to do.

So if anyone knows of any good places or could help me out that would be great. I’m hoping that if I did go to an engine rebuilder the cost wouldn’t be too much as I have all the parts needed to complete the rebuild and have half of the engine rebuilt.

Hope you can help guys

So really you just need a head rebuild? Sounds like you are almost there!

Yeah nearly there now, was a nightmare to start with. Have so far spent more on parts for it than i orginally paid for it :D

I guess i could do it myself, but would be nice under the eye of someone who knows what they are doing. Or if not to just give the engine to someone so they can finish it for me.

But would prefer to do it with someone so that i learn from it

If you've not had the head apart, I really would send it off to get stripped and inspected and at the very least new stem seals and have the valves re-ground in, then it's just a case of sticking it back on.

Yeah seeing as everything else has been done might as well do this too. The head has already been skimmed.

I have valve stem seals in my head kit so makes sense.

Question is does anyone know of anywhere in or around Bristol that can do it?

Or could i do it myself if i get a valve stem removing tool?

I know of a very good company in Fareham, It's one of those jobs as while it's apart it can all be check, Valves for being bent, Gudies etc so unless you have the tools it's not a DIY job, not so bad if you had the engine running before but a unknown one it's not worth the risk in my book

I've had bits and pieces done by Padfields next door to Temple Meads, but not anything major like an engine or head rebuild. Haven't heard anything bad about them though...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Will try Padfields. Not sure about Fareham its abit far from here.

Am thinking of using QEP again. Think i'll give them a call tomorrow to see how much they will charge.

Just out of interest how much have they charged to rebuild the head?

Zebedies in Calne (Nr Chippenham) would do it.

I'm not sure as it's not done yet. It depends on how much you need done I guess.

I'll let you know in the next week or so as it should be done by then. :P

Bristol pug breakers, are my local scrap yard! assuming that this is the same BPB we're talking about... the one around the back of halfords etc. in Brislington? on flowers hill?

i havnt seen the Padfields garage open for a while, but i go past at very odd times of day so i've just put it down to that. infact, are they still at theat place next to temple meads anymore? i realy cant remember having seen the garage there for a while, but as said, i only go down that part of road when theres a failure in the station area, and we can only get access at night as otherwise the tracks are too busy with trains for us to go playing around with them!

he's a good guy, i know him well, always happy to help and has even given me parts on 'credit' so i can pop back the next day once i've visited a cash machine.

he's very knolagable. so give him a ring and he'll be able to point you in the right direction of a good head builder for your style head.

it's a shame he's now gone, but there was a 205GTi specialist in Coalpit Heath who built competition engines and had a rolling road; only other local i've used for that kind of thing is Nick Stagg, although not sure where he is now, either

there'll be someone worth using locally, would have thought

It was a good 4 years ago when I last used Padfields, so maybe they aren't going any more? Strange the number doesnt work anymore. OT sorry, but does that breaker in Bris get many 205s in? Keep meaning to take a look there

Hiya Guys

Thanks for all your replies. Nice to see some more local guys on here.

I've seen the guy in Brislington a few times and like you say he's a good guy. Got my windscreen from there last time i went up there.

He has quite a lot of bits and pieces up there with even a few whole cars outside.

My old flatmate did recommend Advance Motor Sports which is in the kingswood area (I think) so will give them a call to see what they can do, if not will try the peugeot breaker guy.

Will let you know how I get on tomorrow
