Twin Fan Set Up

Recommended Posts

Rolando

hello, i've looked through the technical archive bit and cant seem to find how to fit/install a second fan. i see some people install a second fan to come on with the first fan but then this also has an overide switch so they can turn it on manually inside the car. how do you do this?

at the moment what i did which was stupid and wrong was, went to the scrapyard, got my self the diesel twin fans, used my 1.6 wiring and then bridged the second fan on to that or can that be done? i'm guessing not as that would be too much strain on the wiring/relays?

any help would be great

Thanks Ro

If you really want a twin-fan setup (and I personally don't see the need) then why not just run the relay setup that the diesel models use to control the twin-fans? Plugs straight in and works with no need to modify anything or worry about running too much current through the wiring or thermoswitch.

I've done exactly what you said on my GTi. Got diesel fans and basically i took the blocks apart and joined them together and plugged it in. (Got 4 wires going into where there should be 2..) Works exactly how it should. Both come on at a slow speed and then at a faster speed when hotter.

Maybe it's not ideal, but it works for me!!

The question should be why do you want to do this. If 1 fan is not cooling your engine down then you have a problem with the cooling system. By adding a second fan all you are doing is papering over the cracks.

Reason i did it was to cool down my engine quicker. The two fans do that nicely.

309 dual fan setup does the same

I just took the wiring from the Diesel 205, plugged pretty much straight in as far as I can remember.

Although, swaping to a new radiator helped too!

Basically, i took the grey plugs apart and squished the wires into the spade connectors.. I've got 4 wires going into one of the grey plugs. I'll try and get a photo if you still want?

It works fine, i've had no trouble with it. I wasn't sure if mine was working when i did it, but it does! :)

Im sure when I did this it was a case of just unplugging the fan loom from the diesel and plugging it straight into the gti, no mods needed, I think it even used one of the plus thats normally unused on the gti (red one)?

it's just plug & play

at least 309 loom, consisting of 3 relays and no resistor

connects to +distribution box, -earth point, two fans and thermoswitch

'slow' runs both fans instead of fan and resistor on GTI setup

'fast' runs just one fan

The red plug that is talked about is not in my 205 loom am i right in thinking the two wires which one is red coming from the thermoswich is a permanant live and the other is a yellow wire going to the 5 pin relay (centre terminal) is a swiched live ? please help in final stages now !!!!!!!!

You should find the other end of the red plug hiding behind the n/s headlight on the GTi. That's where I found mine. Wasn't connected to anything beforehand afaik
