Be3 Gearbox Whine In 4th Gear

I'm just about to fit a Quaife LSD to my BE3 box. However, its got a whine in 4th gear when the engine is under load. I understand from the Haynes bible that 3rd and 4th are a shared gear hub, but 3rd is fine, no noise. Question is, is this worth being bothered about? If it is a problem, what is the likely cause? I don't want to waste my time fitting the diff and then having to replace the box!

 

The box is fine otherwise, changing gear etc.

 

I've tried searching for this and I've not got anything back.

 

Any tips would be great. :lol:

not 100% whether it would cause it, but the driving gear for 4th sits on a bush on the input shaft, whereas the driven gear (the 3/4th unit) is splined directly to the output shaft and doesn't turn.

 

the other thing is could be is the main bearings, as you move up the gears you move further away from the bellhousing and more pressure is placed on the outer bearings, though you'd still get the noise in 5th afaik if that was the case.

 

Miles who runs Pugracing is the resident gearbox man :lol:

Cheers for the info. The main bearings being worn very much sounds like it. It does have a whine in 5th too, not as pronounced as the whine in 4th. Sounds like a gearbox rebuild or a new box then. :D

Well I removed the box out of the car, found that it was for a 1.9 not a 1.6. So its new gearbox time... oh, the joys of old cars! :D

that would not matter one bit, apart from being a tad long for a standard 1.6, and ideal for a 1.9.

Sorry should have mentioned that its not for a road car. Its for my stage rally car, so long gearing is not really the best.

 

I've managed to get a 4.8 CWP and I'm going to rebuild the box with that. :lol:

 

I stripped the box down and it looks like the input shaft bearings were causing the whine BTW. The gears and synchros are like new.

nice, 4.8 F/D w2ith the 1.9 cluster would be one of the most ideal set of ratios this side of a close ratio gearkit for a rally car, as long as you have the revs for it.
