Excessive Camshaft Bearing Cap Wear

Recommended Posts

I've found an S16 head complete in the garage, but on closer inspection shows excessive wear to the camshaft bearing caps. Now, without having to pull out my plastigauge and hunt for tolerances, can someone tell me whether this head is now scrap?

It doesn't look that bad from the pictures. If it did measure up out of tolerance a good machine shop could take a lick off the mating faces and then line bore the caps back to size to reclaim it. Doesn't look bad enough to need that though TBH.

That looks fine to me. Keep in mind the cams turn at half crank speed. If you do ever need line boring it can be a real problem with these heads. Most places can not do the 20mm diameter size of the smaller journals. So don't loose or mix up cam caps!!!!
