Performance Head Gasket For An Xu5ja

Recommended Posts

quat-fro

Hello there,

As the subject line eludes I'm looking for a performance head gasket for a 1600 8v Gti engine. Cometic was my first port of call but they only list a gasket for the XU9JA - the 1900 version, with an 84mm bore, I didn't ask for the thickness when I called...

So, presumably, it should be perfectly good for a 1600 engine, right? Or are there other performance alternatives that I'm not aware of?

Any further info would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Tom.

any particular reason why a standard £15 off the shelf item wont do the job perfectly fine?

As Welshpug says. I use the standard gasket with ~18psi boost pressure, no issues to date.

Both the 1.6 & 1.9 engines are the same 83mm bore & use the same head gasket but as already questioned, why whent he standard gasket (of good quality) is more than up to the ttask.

Graham.

Sounds as useless as a performance timing belt.

I have jitters over standard head gaskets as so many times in the past, and despite my best efforts, customers of mine chose the path of economy only to receive a nasty bite to the arse!

Having said that, my experience in Peugeot circles is limited and past issues generally centred around Subaru engines but just to be on the safe side, my logic is to go with a quality known to be utterly reliable, rather than well dressed cardboard.

Since my first post however, I have now had the chance to diagnose the engines problems first hand. It would appear that both the engine bearings and at least one set of rings have given up the ghost and not the head gasket as first presumed, so perhaps Payen ain't so bad after all! Maybe I'll post up a report once it all comes apart...

indeed, if you stick to a recognised brand you'll have no issues, Payen is one of the good names to use, they supply a lot of o.e parts.

Normally head gasket problems are not due to the gasket itself. Its often a wrecked head that causes the problem. I use a standard headgasket on a peugeot turbo engine running 1.2 bar with no problems...
