Last Touches Before First Start Up..

Recommended Posts

Team BDR

I bought a '89 1.9 gti that needed the engine reassembling and putting back together. Im now not far off first start up but need to know the following;

The only modification is a k&n filter that has removed some pipework. The filter is behind the passenger headlight.

1. where does the hose underneath the throttle body go?

2 where does the hose from the idle valve go? I've got one end in a rubber hose just before the throttle body. opposite this hose i've got a breather from the oil filler cap.

3. where does the other end of the dizzy vacuum advance go?

I have searched for reference pics and checked the haynes manual but these only really show whats on top of the engine bay. Please help as once this is sorted i can put fluids in and try to start her

Thanks in advance,

Rob

Hi, theres 2 hoses under the throttle body iirc, one comes from the thermostst housing into the throttle housing then the other goes from the throttle housing to the expansion tank.

I really can't remember where the vacuum advance goes, I'd guess it must be the throttle body too

I can't give you the exact answers, although Dave's first reply seems correct. The dizzy vacuum advance though would probably come off the inlet manifold itself; look for a small copper(ish) tube/take-off.

However to be sure, go look in here and get 'your' booklet for your engine, and there will be a diagram in there somewhere (or a couple combined) which answers your questions and many that will appear in the future.

.

There is 3 from under the T/B

1. Under throttle body to thermostat housing

2. Under throttle body to expansion bottle R/H side outlet

3. Under throttle body to dizzy vacuum

Not sure if I'm thinking of the same hose (idle valve) / (SAD) rear hose to under the inlet mani, front hose to hose just before the throttle body,

Thanks guys. They were all under the inlet/ throttle body. I've got them all connected now and fluids in. tried to start it and as soon as you turn the key to the starter position it dies and all the lights go out. going to check out the haynes now but any (more  ) help or advise would be greatly received,

Cheers,

Rob

I dont think so. My brother has been using the same battery to crank hes williams 172 over and thats turning over fine . The only thing I can think of is the wiring behind the headlight and the starter relay :(

Earth cable connected?

Sounds like a dead battery to me, but you say otherwise...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll take a known good battery tomorrow to double check. I'll also get some new clamp as the +ve looks oval. Haynes has a section on how to test the starting system so i'll run through that tomorrow. I have two connections to the starter, ones the 12v feed and the other a spade connector. I guess its possible i've knocked it off while fitting the above pipework so will check that too.

That is a possibility (knocking the starter solenoid wire off), did it 2 my mates 106 twice earlier without meaning to. Partly due to his sh!t crimping skills

yea i'd knocked the starter solenoid wire off. Fitted new terminals too and it fired. Found out i've also got a switch for the fuel pump. It wasnt idling well at all. Played with the mixture screw and the dissy and got it to a nice 1200 idle. It then died with a little pop and now im back to square one with it not even cranking. The headlights dont dip which suggests its wiring? I've got 12v at the starter bolt on connection and the spade is connected but open circuit. I think I need to trace wire 46 (crimped connector) and check i've got continuity.

Any other help/suggestions appreciated,

Rob
