Fitting Of 13 Row Mocal Oil Cooler Onto Mi16

Recommended Posts

craigmi16

hi i am going to fit an oil cooler to my mi16 but i need some advice on doing so.

the cooler is going to be fitted at the front in the spare fan area on the drivers side.

i have opened the front end up and trimed the center peice of the fan cowel but the cooler is fairly large so i will have to cut a fair bit off of the plastic for it to fit as it is a tight space and having a large cappacity alloy radiator doesnt help much ethier and even when i do get it fitting in position it is going to be a bit of a pain for mounting because there isnt realy anything solid for fixing to apart from maby the metal arm that secures the bumpers.also what way have others ruted there pipes for the cooler back to the block?

does any one have any pictures of the installation of their cooler cutting of the fan cowels rutes of their piping for the cooler.

here are a few pics of the cooler and the car and where it should go.

i cant up load the pics on here because there off my phone and it wont let me up load more than 500k so i will have to put the links in there on photo bucket

all opinions and advice welcome good or bad

You might need to re-think that, from the photos it looks like your air flow is going straight into the bulkhead. You only have a small corner of the cooler in free flow. :)

I'm thinking to make some holes in the spoiler, but I drive some trackdays, and the oil temperature is not up to 110º.

This may take longer to install but very effective.

It's more that there won't be any flow in that area because you have the bulkhead right behind it. You really need to have it in a place where there's space on both sides so air can pass through it. If it was about 4" lower it would be fine!

Finally  It amazes me how many people fit oil coolers where the air goes in and cannot come out again, it just swirls around the back and gets hot, massivly reducing the efficency of the cooler.

I know! Besides, if there's nowhere for the air to leave then it won't go there in the first place.

This is where mine lives:

It's dead simple, just some mild steel box section. I should put them into production really!

Would it be better if the cooler was mounted upside down with the fittings at the bottom & the supply & return lines running low down for when an oil change is due? I don't think the cooler would syphon with it mounted 'conventionally'.

You're right, it wouldn't, but I don't think there's enough oil in it for it to matter.

relay like Cameron's idea would have to cut a fair bit of plastic for it to fit like that.

also done some research on mocal and they advise you to put it as close to the rad as possible because if its further away i.e a gap between them then hot turbulent air from the cooler will not pass through the rad so well and cause a hot spot so the best place is as close as possible without touching.

also another thought on the stainless braided hoses i got in the kit on one end there is a shallow bend and the other there is a sharper bend at almost 90 degrees is there a must was that these are to be fitted or just whatever works best for your personal set up?

good answers and comments by the way. keep them coming

sorry to raise this topic again, but will the Mocal kit/lines etc directly replace the one fitted as std to a 1.9 (except in a slightly different location)? for eg will you just need to undo the exg cooler and pipework and then put the new cooler and pipework in or will a new sandwich plate be needed? I would like to install a new one before I go to Cadwell again in Sept. And will put it where Craig has installed his.

Yes the kits come complete, as Xsport sell them on ebay etc is a good example, fitted one to Jonny's car recently.

Or, you can just get one to replace the standard cooler, utilising the existing hoses and sandwich plate yes, but you'll need to get a cooler that has the same size fittings as the hoses etc of course, easier fitting-wise & much cheaper of course too.

I'd say a 13row is a little on the large side despite having one, i also have a 10 or so row one on the Sorrento Mi and that works fine, too well even still in the cooler weather if not covered!

What 10 row are you using? would be interesting to know as im going to be using during the winter, and dont the oil cooling too much.
