No Spark 1.6gti Engine 1987

Recommended Posts

Engine suddenly stopped. There is no spark when earthing the main HT cable from coil. There are 12Volts in and out of the coil. I don't know how to check the ign module. The LT cable appears to be okay.

Any advice please

Well , i dunno if there's simple method for testing ignition amps :) certainly never heard about "testing" it ..

So , try to replace with known good one  a spare one/used will do .. just don't forget to re-apply the thermal transfer paste @ the back of the amp prior to refitting it back on the ally plate ..

Damir :P

and check the dizzy signal cable , the black one with 3pin yellow plug on the end ..

Many thanks for the thermal grease tip which i did not know about.

I did in fact have three spare secondhand ignition modules purchased from members of this forum and each was tried in turn without any success. The coil, wiring and distributor all tested okay so, in a leap of faith I bought a brand new ignition module and, success, it now works.

I would state that I am not bringing the integrity of said forum members into question and I am sure the modules worked when removed from their respective vehicles and were sold to me in good faith. I mention it just to illustrate that perhaps they can deteriorate over time in a Devon damp environment and perhaps not a good item to rely on as a spare.

After the less than entusiastic reception to my fire extinguisher post I'm a bit hesitant about recommending any other suppliers but will in case it is of help to someone.

Prices I researched for the ignition module as follows; Peugeot £79.51, Partco £57.78, GSF £34.50. Kennys cash & carry Exeter £27.04 on sameday delivery. I have just collected one from Kennys, fitted it with the thermal grease and it works. we're back in business.

Just to counter the doubters, I have bought many components from Kennys in the past and there has never been a quality issue with them just really good prices and service.

Nice to hear you've fixed it B)

As for the second hand/used ignition amps. , i have a few spare ones (used) and they all work , and most of them which i've collected @ the scrappy they where all good ..

If they don't work , could be that someone did the refitting/testing job without mounting it on the ally plate or without the thermal paste - without either of the two it'll overheat in no time and burn out .. and it'll be scrap , though it still might work but will make all kinds of problems producing misfiring , weak spark , hard starting etc.

.. but as you said , moisture certainly is the enemy for ignition/electric components , along with the heat and vibrations (but this the ignition amps are sealed items , with some kid of epoxy glue around the edges , so the moisture could get inside only if this the epoxy coating was cracked .. at least me thinks so  )

Damir

Thanks Damir. It was just my bad luck that they were all faulty but good luck that it happened when it did because next week we are off to France for the Laon Historique.
