Cti Interior Detailing

Recommended Posts

Some of you may remember a thread that I started last month requesting advice regarding whether or not the CTI and Lion logos on the steering wheel of a phase 1 CTI were white or silver due to only having b+w photos? The general consensus was that silver was correct. I was also happy with this until...

Over the last few months I have started collecting some automobilia for this car and one that arrived today completely threw a spanner in the works over this. It is a mint dealer's brochure dated August 1986 (same month and year as my car) and inside I found this:

Apologies for the quality, I had to split the parts of the same page and reduce for the file upload. But these photographs clearly show both logo and gearknob as white as opposed to silver instead of the red found in the GTI.

I know that this may seem rather picky (silver or white) but now I am even more undecided as to what to do. Most guys from on here have silver, yet all the period photographs I now have point towards white!?

I am thinking that I may go for white, since the original gearknob in my car has the gear numbering in white (well, kinda 24year old creamy-yellow white!)

I just thought that I'd post this as a follow-up just incase anyone else is as sad as me trying to get the detailing spot on for their early CTI :)

Hi - good find.

The gearknob was white-ish on mine (replaced it as it was so bad -but you can't buy phase 1 style gearknobs from the dealers anymore - they are all phase 1.5/2 style with correct shift pattern and plastic disc on top) but the wheel is definately silver (original too) to match the rear badge and the badges on the mudflaps.

Don't for one second think that I am pointing fingers or anything, but I have always been of the mind of doing something properly, I'm not one of those types that'll just buy any after-market type tat for car resto's.

Therefore, to do a good job of bringing a car back to it's former glory, attention to detail must be paid.

It's a pity there aren't more people willing to put the extra effort in on older cars, perhaps then there would be more decent examples around and situations like not knowing exact colours/parts etc would never arise in the first place because the condition would've have been preserved well enough to start with.

Well if stufarri's is silver and blippi's is white I think we could say that they were possibly built with both colour variations.

The plot thickens...

I'm with you on this one. Some people think it geeky, some people (like me) love the quest for originality and the truth. There are a load of old brochures, road tests etc on the PSOOC website in the members area.

Looking at my brochure collection, the phase 1's were white too. All CTI gearknobs have white writing in them including the 1.9's

I agree the knob is white but the wheel centre badge on my phase 1 CTI is definately silver.

Cheers Henry, I'm glad there are others that go the extra mile regarding authenticity. I think it's high time I joined PSOOC to gain access to some of that info!

Miles? ....I do hope that you're not inferring that the CTI is a base model? ;) Yes, it shares the suspension set up (and now it looks like the white interior detailing) but IMO that's where the similarity ends! Don't forget that a standard CTI cost more than a standard GTI when new! Technically putting it at the top of the range lol

I hear you here brother! Things are slowly changing over here with regards to CTIs and they are becoming more tolerated :D Miles has an exceptionally tidy D plate Haze CTI and I remember hearing him quote that out of all his Peugeots, that is the only one he will never sell. We like to think of them as XS spec suspension as opposed to base model, though I am on full GTI running gear now :$

No fair, I want GTI running gear too! I know it's not totally original to the car, but it's still 205 bits innit!? ;)

I have said it before and I'll say it again - the CTI will have its day! Reason is, while the majority are spending time and money on the buying and sorting GTI's, the CTI's will diminish in number. Then, when they are as rare as rocking horse sh**, everyone will suddenly want one, but it'll be guys like yourself, Miles and I that can finally say 'glad I bought mine when I did, I don't fancy paying x-amount of £1000's for one!' :P

I wanted a Haze, almost bought one too, but I procrastinated far too long over it and lost out to someone else - it sold for £255 in the end IIRC! Gutted. Ended up with a red one, which incidentally is the colour I like the least AND it cost more! That said, I am of the same mind as Miles, I'm not sure I'll be letting mine go in a hurry, despite it being red!

I was only jesting with Miles' comment, it was just worded in a way that may have insinuated base model status, but I knew that wasn't his intended meaning :D

Just got to get my old white GTI 1.6 back and a Topaz 1.9 and I'll be well chuffed! Although I don't think the missus will be, she barely tolerates the CTI, I wonder what she'll be like with two GTI's too!?? :)
