How Much Oil Will I Loose

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

i have an oil leak on the front of the block, either from the sandwich plate from the oil cooler or from the sump directly under the oil filter.

i am reluctant to remove the sump if i dont need to so was planning on removing the filter and tightening the sandwich plate and cross my fingers that it stops the leak.

how much oil am i likely to loose through the filter? or is it just what is in the filter?

and for the life of me i cant remeber how the filter plate goes on? is it a nut or a threaded stud into the block? if someone can refresh my memory :D

You will only lose the oil thats in the filter, the sandwich plate is held on with a threaded shaft that undoes using a 27mm socket iirc :D

excellent (said in a monty burns fashion) i have also just read that they have a o ring on them between the plate and the block so it could be this.

will i loose much more oil from removing the plate too?? so i can check/replace the o ring

You see, to me, I would just drain it and do it properly. I never see the point in going in half cocked. Whats five litres of oil cost and a filter? i would see it as an excuse to service it.

I like changing oil and cam belts :)

I hope you dont get me wrong on this, I am not trying to preach, I just think its gonna be easier to do it all.

i get where your comming from orb. but personally id do it the way pete is, as hes not 100% sure the oil cooler it the reason for the leak.

and for the price of a filter, o ring seal and a little top up of the oil he can either rule out or confirm where its coming from.

you can argue that for another £20 and 15mins he could drop the oil. but it wont have any baring on the amount of oil dropped when removing the filter.
