F**k**ng Downpipe Nuts!

Recommended Posts

d7ve_b

I've just been trying to replace the downpipe and middle section off my standard 1.6. I have spent no less than 2 hours fighting the O/S nut that joins the downpipe to the manifold only to find that it is now rounded....in two hours I reckon i've moved it maybe 2 turns? Good progress eh?:D

I've now given up until I either find the motivation to try again, or surrender to defeat and take it to a garage. Thankfully I haven't released it enough for it to blow through the join so it should be ok for the Lancs group meet tomorrow night.

Just needed to vent my frustration. Thank you for listening.

Get a hacksaw blade (good quality one) make yourself a handle at one end with tape, then cut through it. Doesn't take all that long and then you can replace with a new bolt and nut. Sorted.

:D :D I know exactly how you feel, Last month I had to fit a 1 piece exhaust system to my 2.0 turbo 205 and its safe to say I don't want to do it again in a hurry!

Good idea, thanks Tom. I might pop to halfrods and see if I can find one, it might just give me the motivation to have another go...

When I read that the downpipe and middle section were one piece I nievely(sp?) thought 'that should make it easier to fit as there are less pieces' :D . The annoying thing is that I only really need the middle section as my existing centre box has a hole in it.

I can no way recommend anyone else does this, but I take the guard off my angle grinder to get these off if stuck.

Obviously very dangerous, but works for me.

Also you can just use a bit of BFI, a long bar placed against the spring or cup and hammer, and twat it in the hope that either the bolt breaks, or the cup pulls past the nut or similar.

But be prepared for the flange on the manifold to crack..... It's what I do, though

I've had this before, turned out to be down to the tools. My cheap-and-crappy ring spanner would just spin round on it but as soon as i got a good quality ratchet spanner on it, it got just enough purchase to undo. Oh for some snap-ons...

I get mine over the pit or on the axle stands and get the big bar on there and crack it off ....well try my best to wreck it which for me isnt to difficult...

Dave, I will take it to the lancs meeting tommorrow evening and if its not for you thats 100% no problem mate.

Taking some struts up for pugtorque to and bringing back my new front seats.....all in my new 205...
