Should It Start?

hi just after fitting an mi16 engine to my mates 309 3 door goodwood and its just about running it will start and then run like a bag or crap for a minute on full throttle then die.

 

the exhaust is not fitted because it is being fabricated at the moment just the manifold is fitted.

 

i know that the engine needs back pressure to run but with the exhaust not there will it be enough??

It should run fine, it will be a bit flat, but will run. Sounds like you have some other issue with it.

An engine does not need back pressure to run. Back pressure is an unwanted side effect of having to use certain sized pipework for complicated reasons to do with pressure waves in the exhaust.

 

It will run fine without the exhaust.

My old SJ410 struggled to start a few times without a center box, as soon as I added one in it was fine.

my MI used to get run often with no exhaust when i'd just put it in. so the exhaust is definatly not needed. however ear defenders may be needed! but then again, maybe not. i used to love the loud sound of it. and rev'd it often to make it even better. not sure my parents agreed with it 'sounding good' though

My gti-6 engine has no trouble starting with no exhaust, much to the anoyance of the neighbours
