Oil Filter / Cooler

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I have been swapping many parts between 2 cars, old red one and new black one, both 1.9 GTIs the old is an 89 P1.5 and the new is a 90 P2.

the red one had an oil cooler, so under the filter was an adaptor type thing that fed the hoses to the cooler and back, simple.

on the black on, there is a plate on the engine where filer would normally be, these run to the filter which is in front of the gearbox, which then has an additional hose split which seems to connect to the cooling system / radiator hoses. not quite sure how this works, or if it is better / worse / more problematic than a standard oil cooler.

any one know whats this may be or if its any good?

cheers in advance

It's a 309-style oil/water heat exchanger. Instead of exchanging heat through air in the cooler, it passes the oil close to the cooling water in the radiator top-hose, and so cools (and warms) the oil that way.

As the purpose of purely cooling the oil, I found it useless in competition use (hardly surprising) and removed it.

As an oil warmer, particularly in cold climates, I suspect it is more functional.

On a normal daily road car I would use one, on the basis it works well at warming the oil up to temperature, but if you're looking to add additional cooling capacity to your oil, I wouldn't recommend one - especially if your car is a track or competition car.

Just checking, is it a plastic round section in the cooling system hose, with two small-guage take-offs perpendicular to it which connect to the oil system?
