Help With Gearbox Oil - Race This Sunday!

Recommended Posts

tommybGTI

Hello all.

Im getting my car ready for a race this sunday. Its a 1987 1.9 gti. I had to change the driveshafts because after a track day last week they were making a horrid noise. Anyway - in doing this i lost a fair amount of fluid out of the gearbox, and after looking through my haines manual im confused as to wether my gearbox just uses the engine oil, or if i drain and fill it seperately. Ive checked the engine oil and it does seem to have dropped a bit, but not sure if this is enough to answer my question. Last thing i want to do is top up the oil, assume all is well, and ruin the box.

I couldn't find any point of entry for gearbox oil, i took the battery out and nothing was under that either. Help/suggestions/advice massively apprecaited.

Tom.

Either fill through the level plug on the side of the gearbox, or through the lift-up reverse cable hole.

Use 75W80 gearbox oil - Total BV works well in my experience. Gearbox usually takes ~1.8 litres to fill from empty.

To answer your question, the gearbox oil is separate. 2 litres capacity. Filled through a hole on the side of the gearbox, under the wheel arch and accessible behind the left wheel. Although some people prefer to fill via the top breather, if you're filling from empty this is easier as you can just put 2 litres in - but if you're topping up, this is not useful.

Main recommendation for you though - get a haynes manual - always worth keeping at hand for reference on race day (and at home, of course).

edit : Sorry, just noticed in your post, you've got one!

Use the Total BV for Peugeot/Citroen boxes, the synchros don't work right with anything else. Your LSD will be fine.

The only 205s with mixed engine and gearbox oil are very early non GTIs so it doesn't matter which year yours is, it will need about 1.8 litres but just top it up until it reaches the level plug.

Thanks again for the replies. The more i look at the box the less i think its an original 205 gti box because it doesnt match up to the haynes picture etc. I cannot find a filler point anywhere. im going to take a couple of blackberry pics of the box and post them on here, if anyone can recognise it and give me some pointers i'd really appreciate it.

Tom.

btw - i've bought 75w/140 fully synthetic oil for the LSD.

Heres some pics. Im now thinking that the larger bolt on the first picture, near the driveshaft could be the input?

also what is the sensor in picture 2? Nothing is connected to it at the moment.

Thanks guys!

Larger bolt in the first picture is indeed the level plug - basically, fill the gearbox until oil begins to trickle out of there.

The sensor is the reverse light switch.
