Weird Starting Issue

Recommended Posts

cheesegrater

I've just put a new/different 1600 engine in my GTi and it was time to start her up however it doesn't turn over. I can hear the fuel pump prime and everything else seems to work. There's four wires that come down towards the starter motor area, could some one please confirm where these go. I'm pretty sure the chunkier/blue wire is the solenoid feed which gives out a tad under 12 volts when the key is in IGNITION(?) not START and does not, as I'd assume it should, energise the solenoid.

I tried reading the schemes but can't make much sense of them.

Thanks.

Tom.

The four wires that run along the front of the engine from the brown multiplug near the gearbox are listed in this topic here.

Well the weird things is that when I give a feed directly from the battery it works fine. Also according to the schemes I should only be getting a feed on 46 when the key is in start.

very odd. i presume 46 is the chunky blue wire? which has the 12v sitting on it when key in ignition. it is rather odd. unless the chunky blue is the switched 12V of somthing else. do any other wires only give an out put when key is in 'start' (stage 3)?

Is the starter motor sticking? Give it a tap with a hammer while someone turns the key (its a good idea to make sure its not in gear at this point...)

Seriously man, the amount of yee harr wiring I've discovered today! We fiddled about with it all evening checking all the wiring and making sure it was all correctly connected, in the end it worked?! It seems to be a dodgey connection somewhere. Either in the main engine bay loom or the ignition switch loom. 46 is the chunky blue one yes. Weird thing with it is there is no volts in ignition, 12 volts in start and then 12 volts in ignition after its gone back and started?
