13mm Nuts On Manifold Wont Budge? 2 Different Opinions?

Recommended Posts

IOWGENTRY

Hi Everyone

I am having some trouble removing my 13mm bolts to remove the manifold. I have 2 very good friends 1 pro mechanic the other self taught mechanic 205 specialist who really knows 205's. Been trying to undo the manifold to replace the shot gasket.

One mate said not to heat bolt to remove it because it may damage or melt alloy head? The other said if we cant shift the bolts to get the oxy settling torch on them to free them up?

Whats you opinions as I trust both people? HELP?

Take your time otherwise you'll end up rounding something off. Higher quality tools do help ALOT.

when i know something is going to be a bugger i use these steps:

wirebrush it if possible

plusgas (i FERKING love this stuff!!!)

then use a decent(snapon or similar) 6 sided socket

one quick hard turn on it not a slow rounding one if you know what i mean

if that doesnt work...

a big MF hammer or bigger bar lol

if all else fails ... GASAXE!!! :)

and just to add to ^^^^^^^^^^

you could even try a smaller 12 point socket if the nuts start to round off :)

cut the nuts off, then get a stud extractor on whats left when the manifold is off.

Irwin nut grips are what you need, when all else fails these boys will get you out of the deep stuff!

I've hammered on a smaller socket when I couldn't shift a rounded nut. It really was a last resort as I was pushed for time and didn't have some of the options mentioned above to hand. Otherwise I would have tried those first. :)

I got mine last time I was in the states. Their equivalent of Halfords were selling them, I think I paid $25 for the base and expansion set, so I have all 10 tools in mine.

Their car shops are really good, loads of useful stuff in unlike Halfords etc here who have s*it all. Things like Helicoil kits on the shelf etc.

I think i paid about 35 quid for the two sets to make up the set of ten, absolutely invaluable
